South Sands

  • Right next door to a busy sailing and watersports centre, Salcombe's South Sands is a good pick for active families. Kids will love the seaside vibes, plus the spacious self-catering beach suites are ideal for a comfortable stay. The restaurant serves brasserie-style fare and local seafood, and there's a terrace for admiring those amazing views.
  • Saunton Sands Hotel is, as the name suggests, right on the beach. Families have flexible options here, including apartments, plus there's a supervised playroom and two hours' free childcare per day for under-eights. There's also 2AA Rosette fine dining and a relaxing spa for the grown-ups. Located on the magnificent South West Coastal Path, it's in an ideal spot for exploring further afield, or trying the many watersports nearby.

Burgh Island

  • Built in the 1930s on a 26-acre tidal island, Burgh Island offers a unique stay. Rooms are comfortable and full of Art Deco charm, with wonderful sea views. You'll find GPO Bakelite telephones (no mobile signal here) and classic pre-war cocktails; you'll also be encouraged to dress up, with men donning black tie on two nights a week. With dancing to live bands, tennis, and croquet, it's a magical step back in time.

The Red Lion

  • Looking for a quiet seaside getaway with a glimpse of years gone by? The Red Lion overlooking Clovelly Harbour is located right on the quayside — think car-free streets and fishermen landing their catch. The property dates back to the 18th century and was converted from three former cider houses, with rooms that reflect the nautical location. All have wonderful views either over the harbour or out to sea, plus there are two bars and the Harbour Restaurant.
  • On the outskirts of Shaldon village overlooking the Teign Estuary, sits The Ness House. This pretty Victorian property has nine charming rooms, some with copper tubs. It's home to a buzzy gastro pub, and just 20 yards away you'll find the Smugglers Tunnel leading down to the secluded Ness Beach.
