Hotel Review

A relaxed, light and uncluttered guest house in an elegant Victorian terrace in York’s smart Clifton area that skilfully mixes a period feel with a bright, modern touch. Run with charm and thoughtfulness by owners Jonathan and Anthony, this gem has interiors that reflect their love of both the US and York with a selection of spectacular art by start-up artists from Yorkshire and rural townships in the United States. Bedrooms have bright shower-only bathrooms with Noble and Isle products. Founded on the principles of Yorkshire hospitality and British warmth The Bishop & The Bison offers great value and an award-winning breakfast.

Bedrooms, spread over three floors, follow a similar style and are lightly furnished - open-rail wardrobes, neat stools - to make the most of their (mostly) modest size. Thoughtful details include individual reading lights, and kettles as well as coffee machines. Shower-only bathrooms are quite small but bright and modern, and with generous toiletries.

Breakfast in the airy dining room overlooking the courtyard is prepared to order either by Jonathan or Anthony with hot dishes including bacon butties, omelettes, smoked salmon, and a full grill with vegetarian option. Afternoon tea and cheeseboards can be ordered, and there's a tempting selection of gins for pre-dinner drinks. For evenings, be advised to follow Jonathan and Anthony’s suggestions. We recommend colourful Los Moros (losmorosyork.co.uk), a North African restaurant near York Minster, for punchy flavours, friendliness and good value.
