Yorkshire’s towns and cities have plenty of appeal for visitors, from perennial beauty, medieval York to lively Leeds and Sheffield, and you’ll find plenty of recommendations in the big centres on our list of the best places to stay in Yorkshire too. And in the handsome market towns like Helmsley, and spa towns like Harrogate. Yarm is a good place to stay for the North Yorkshire Moors and for access to neighbouring County Durham, and if you want to get to know the Yorkshire Dales, we recommend you stay in either Richmond or Skipton, both charming towns with plenty to see and to in the surrounding area.
Where to Stay in Yorkshire? A bit about the major destinations:
- York is a history buff’s dream, with a medieval city centre that’s a network of cobbled lanes known as ‘The Shambles’, which promises surprises around every corner. Everything inside the imposing 13th century walls is pedestrianised during the day, and it’s just packed with treasures like rare book shops, vintage fashion boutiques, art galleries, independent shops and numerous great cafes. Spectacular York Minster is a Gothic masterpiece.
- Once known for its industry, Leeds has reinvented itself as a cultural hub, with all the trimmings people fancy on a city break. Admire the grand, Victorian architecture, explore the pretty, covered arcades and the pedestrianised areas with their boutiques, cafes, bars and restaurants, and visit Kirkstall Abbey, the Leeds Art Gallery with its excellent collection of British art, the Leeds Industrial Museum and the Royal Armoury Museum.
- Sheffield is another reinvented industrial powerhouse, once known across the country as ’Steel City’, and now promoting itself as a hub of culture and the arts, and a haven for young, creative types. Some of its forges, foundries, factories and mills have been turned into museums celebrating their heyday, which makes for a fascinating visit.
- For something more picturesque try Harrogate, a quintessential Victorian spa town with neat gardens fed by the spring water that the town was built upon. As well as the gardens, Harrogate’s charms included the fashionable hotels and restaurants, and there’s still plenty of that today, as well as a pedestrianised town centre packed with antique shops, art galleries and little boutiques and eateries. Harrogate’s Pump Room is still very much worth a visit, and one should still try a spa treatment and an afternoon tea at Betty's.
- Helmsley is very pretty too, a handsome market town with a cobbled central square, around which there’s a charming collection of stone houses, pubs and inns, and an impressive fortified Norman castle. Market day is still Friday.
- Richmond is another of Yorkshire’s photogenic market towns, this time perched above the River Swale, right on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. The ruins of the town’s castle occupy the top spot, but just behind that is the market square, which is lined with stone cottages, and their grander Georgian and Regency replacements, several which have now been converted into hotels and guesthouses.
- On the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales is Skipton, which our Gurus have picked out for its lovely high street, well preserved medieval castle, and views over the Yorkshire Dales.
- Georgian charmer, Yarm, on the River Tees, is another pretty pick, with cobbled streets, a spectacular railway viaduct, and views reaching toward the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Yarm is perfect for you if your idea of the best place to stay in Yorkshire is a beautiful country house hotel.
- Scarborough is Yorkshire’s primary seaside address, with historical sites, beautiful beaches and natural spring waters to its credit. Scarborough became a spa and seaside resort in the Victorian era, but before that it was a medieval fishing village. It even has a ruined castle. But Scarborough isn’t currently a hip holiday, it’s still a beautiful beach-y one, though, with a promenade lined with arcades and seaside treats, a grand water park and Edwardian pleasure gardens.
- If you want to explore the North Yorkshire Coast Whitby makes a great base. It’s a picturesque seaside resort with a fascinating history and a churchyard teeming with the graves of pirates, and a ruined abbey that apparently provided the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The beaches are long, sandy and revitalising, there are fishing boats in the harbour, a steam train and fantastic fish and chips!
- Hull is another coastal option, and another Yorkshire industrial centre turned cultural powerhouse. Hull grew up on fishing, whaling and importing and exporting — but in 2017 Hull was the European City of Culture! This attention has equated to a redeveloped waterfront and Old Town, an injection of funds into some of Hull’s excellent museums, and the opening of numerous cool cafes and artist’s studios.
Don't forget that this county is a popular year round destination. So if you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Yorkshire (especially if you're visiting during peak season) you'll need to get organised and book well ahead.
The Best Places to Stay In Yorkshire
The Best Yorkshire Escapes
- The Devonshire Arms is the beautifully converted, 40 room, former coaching inn of the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey estate. The decor is classic country house hotel and the views over the parkland are incredible. You’re encircled by superb hiking trails, and you can have a go clay-pigeon shooting, as well as fly-fishing nearby, or head to Bolton Abbey Estate and partake in falconry! The fine dining restaurant has a 3 AA Rosette rating, and there’s a brasserie too, plus an indoor pool.
- Stow House is a large country vicarage in receipt of a recent makeover into a seven room hotel. Its chic, light-filled rooms feature exposed wooden beams and an eclectic collection of antique and vintage furnishings, and its views over Wensleydale are rejuvenating. Arrange to go horse riding for the best way to see the area, then come back for cocktails and a tranquil atmosphere.
- Crathorne Hall Hotel is a small country house hotel set in fifteen acres of beautiful countryside, outside Yarm, close to the North York Moors National Park. This is a serene hotel with 37 rooms and suites and comfortable, welcoming public spaces still decorated with family heirlooms. The rooms have been more recently refurbished, so they’re very comfortable and cosy, and the restaurant has a 2 AA Rosette rating.
For a rural stay
- The Traddock is a cosy Georgian country house hotel in stunning countryside on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. All of The Traddock’s 12 rooms and suites are individually designed and decorated, some with roll-top baths, and our favourite rooms have views over the beautiful gardens and the Dales beyond. The organic restaurant has won several awards.
- Swinton Park Hotel is a proper converted castle, complete with battlements and turrets and 250 acres of parklands, including a lake and a walled gardens, in between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors National Parks. This is English stately home living at its least pretentious. There are just 32 rooms and suites, all of them generously proportioned, and a spa and pool too, plus pony trekking, fishing and a cookery school. Oh, and they welcome kids too!
The Best Hotels in Yorkshire Towns
- The White Hart Hotel is an impressive, Grade II listed Georgian house in the smartest quarter of Harrogate, with 61 spacious, elegant rooms, decorated in a range of styles from contemporary to traditional. It has the restaurants to match too, one relaxed and one fine dining, but both are excellent.
- On the outskirts of York, just two miles from the city centre, Middlethorpe Hall & Spa is a 17th century mansion owned by the National Trust. It has a well equipped spa, with a large pool, sauna, steam room, a hot tub, and a range of treatments. And there's an award-winning 2AA Rosette restaurant.
For a pub with rooms
- The Angel Inn near Skipton started out in the15th Century as a drovers inn but in the 1950s it became a popular pub within the Yorkshire Dales. There are nine comfortable rooms plus a great restaurant serving a ‘modern British’ menu. They also have an impressive wine cave.
- The Wensleydale Heifer is an award-winning restaurant-with-rooms with 14 individually decorated and unusually themed bedrooms. There’s the James Herriot Room, 007, Chocolate Heaven, the Black Sheep, Night at the Movies and the Champagne suite, to name a few. The restaurant is excellent but if you fancy something a bit less fussy there’s also a less formal fish bar.
- The Punch Bowl Inn in the pretty village of Low Row, 30 minutes drive from Georgian Richmond, is a charming 17th century coaching inn with 11 stylish rooms and fantastic views of the Yorkshire Dales.
- A relaxed, no nonsense, pub with rooms, the White Swan Inn, is an updated 16th Century coaching inn in a prime Pickering location, overlooking the market square. There are 21 rooms, the best being the ‘Vintage Rooms’ which are charmingly traditional. And we like the stultifying traditional residents lounge of old, which has been re-imagined as the Club Room, and kitted out with pool table, newspapers, magazines and an honesty bar.
- If you’re looking for a romantic village setting then The Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa in Helmsley is a good choice. There are 33 rooms, and the hot tub is shared between them, but it’s a glorious wooden outdoor affair surrounded by a ‘spa garden’. There’s also a fabulous heated outdoor pool and an award-winning spa. The restaurant comes highly recommended too.
- If you’re a fan of the romance of the Bronte sisters then Ashmount Country House, a five star, 12 room hotel converted from their home, is perfect. The rooms are elegant, with four-poster beds, chandeliers and fireplaces, and some have private terraces and hot tubs. There’s also a superb restaurant championing locally sourced produce.
- Swinton Park Hotel in Masham is a luxurious castle with a relaxed atmosphere and 200 beautiful acres of gardens and grounds. It has 31 large, chic rooms and suites, including some well laid out family suites, and a huge range of activities on offer, including archery, croquet, cycling, and cooking lessons in their cooking school.
- The Lister Arms is a very affordable, nine bedroom coaching inn on the Pennine Way. It’s well loved by walkers, and its pub and restaurant are well loved by locals, and it’s not just welcoming for families, it’s also welcoming of pets. Expect open fires and home cooking.
For great value
- Whitby’s The White Horse and Griffin is a 17th century coaching inn tucked in just behind the abbey. There are ten quirkily shaped rooms with a surprisingly fresh finish, plus a bistro menu and a guest list which has included Charles Dickens and Captain James Cook.
