“This landmark central-Leeds building with its distinctive art deco looks has been refurbished to restore its 1930s glamour but with a sleek contemporary edge. Bedrooms are glossy in monochrome colours while the sultry restaurant offers contemporary Anglo-Indian dishes”

Hotel review

It’s a showstopper of a building; pearly grey stone rising some eight stories in distinctive art deco style with bold windows and geometric detailing. Built in 1937, as the city’s leading hotel – and with a guest list including Princess Grace of Monaco and Cary Grant – it holds a commanding position overlooking the central City Square and next to the station. (You can enter the hotel directly from the station concourse through discreet double doors.) Recently refurbished with a significant investment, its art deco glamour has been beautifully reinstated but subtly updated with a light contemporary feel.

There are still parquet floors, mirrored doors, polished brass and the original red-lacquered lift doors but also creamy lounge-around sofas, intimate alcoves (for meetings or assignations) and a useful coffee bar in the large lounge-lobby. Bedrooms are sleek affairs in a monochrome palette, nicely uncluttered and with art deco touches in light fittings and framed posters. The best have City Square views - be aware some have less attractive internal views - but all are a decent size and have classy, black-and-white, art deco-style bathrooms.

Dinner should start with a cocktail in the New York-style bar with its high stools and black marble-topped counter; perhaps a Ginger Jaggery or Cinnamon Old-Fashioned. These spicy flavours give a clue to the restaurant: Cinnamon Kitchen, the first regional outpost of acclaimed chef Vivek Singh’s modern Anglo-Indian cuisine (there are two in London). Perhaps lamb rogan josh shepherd’s pie or tandoori Scottish venison, and do leave room for the spiced Yorkshire parkin. The circular restaurant with its gilt-topped Corinthian columns, mirrors and tropical-vegetation panels is a sultry treat. An unbeatable location for a big city stay
