Overlooking City Square and next to the station, the Queens was built in 1930 as the city’s leading hotel – and with a guest list including Princess Grace of Monaco and Cary Grant. Recently refurbished to show off its art deco glamour but with a smooth and light contemporary feel, it holds a prime central position with shops, theatres, riverside, the city’s art gallery and financial district all within a 10-minute walk.
Striking public rooms combine original features of parquet floors and panelled pillars with a low-key modern glamour. Step from the street into an expansive lounge, scattered with sofas and armchairs and cleverly separated into cosy alcoves. This leads into a New York-style bar with high stools and black marble-topped bar that cries out for you to order cocktails while the circular dining room with its rattan-back chairs, banquettes and wood panelling has a low-lit, casual glamour. This serves up a mix of pan-Asian and British classics such as salmon tataki and lamb Massam curry as well as home-made burgers and club sandwiches.
Bedrooms, spread over eight floors, share the same uncluttered look and monochrome palette and although some have less attractive internal views, all are a decent size and have classy art deco-style bathrooms. An unbeatable location for a big city stay.
