About South Australia

Life in South Australia centres upon artsy Adelaide, close to the coast in the region’s verdant south. Brilliant for foodies and wine lovers, the lush landscape around Adelaide is studded with sensational vineyards and farms. Head north into the scorching wilderness of the Ikara-Flinders Range National Park or hop across to Kangaroo Island for unparalleled wildlife experiences. Fabulous hotels, B&Bs and farmsteads abound in this wonderful part of Australia. Whether you’re dreaming of a romantic wine country escape or an outdoorsy adventure with the whole family, our list of the best places to stay in South Australia has it all.

Proud to have been set up as a free colony, Adelaide has a more conservative history than certain other Australian cities. It has grown, however, into a youthful city with a lively arts, culture and foodie scene set against its graceful heritage architecture. Do take the time to explore the leafy heart of the city on foot or by bicycle, and catch a match at the Adelaide Oval or a live show at one of the summer festivals.

Just beyond the city are the tranquil Adelaide Hills, dotted with country house hotels. Head slightly further out to discover the world-class wineries of the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale, many of which offer tours and tastings. A few hours drive to the north are the drier, hotter landscapes of the Flinders Ranges — perfect for challenging hikes, wildlife-spotting and an immersion into the region’s Aboriginal past. Finally, Kangaroo Island — Australia’s answer to the Galapagos Islands — remains picturesque and untamed, and very much worth visiting. Remember that the best places to stay in South Australia fill up fast during the summer holidays!

The Best Places to Stay in South Australia

For City Style

  • Oval Hotel offers a seriously special stay in a stylish modern building, wrapped around the iconic Adelaide Oval. Swish rooms and suites face the city's leafy parkland and the cathedral. The Five Regions Restaurant is an Adelaide favourite, serving mouth-watering gourmet cuisine and collaborating with South Australian wineries.
  • The Mayfair Hotel, tucked behind a landmark 1930s façade in Adelaide, has sophisticated rooms and suites with a classic contemporary feel. Decorated in cream and grey tones, this feels like a very grown-up hotel. The Mayflower Restaurant highlights top regional produce, and the Hennessy Bar is a cracking starting point for an evening out.
  • The Playford Hotel is an elegant Art Nouveau property with glamorous rooms and suites featuring organic shapes and soft pastel shades. Think velvet-upholstered armchairs, brass accents and dark marble bathrooms, perfect for a romantic Adelaide city break.
  • The Watson, in Adelaide's lively Walkerville district, showcases the work of celebrated Aboriginal artist Yannima Tommy Watson. Airy suites and studios have white-painted walls and soothing earthy tones, allowing the art to take centre stage. Guided art tours and talks will delight keen culture aficionados.

For an Opulent B&B

  • Jacobs Creek Retreat is a tranquil seven bedroom B&B set around a refreshing pool & leafy gardens in the Barossa Valley. Pick this place for the opulent interiors and real sense of privacy. Private cellar door tours are not to be missed.
  • Cladich Pavilions B&B offers three expansive modern suites with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking verdant surroundings. Romantics will adore kicking back on private terraces or hiding away in big bedrooms after days of sightseeing in the Adelaide Hills. A gorgeous escape.
  • Thorngrove Manor Hotel has just five sumptuous suites housed within a whimsical, antique-filled residence in the Adelaide Hills. The focus here is on absolute privacy — you may not even spot other guests! Primarily a B&B, the property also offers sensational in-suite afternoon teas and occasional gourmet dinners.
  • Hotel California Road at Inkwell Wines comprises three spacious contemporary suites, each with dazzling vineyard views. Set above the vineyard's own tasting room, all have big bathtubs, private balconies and every mod con. Even more unusual: they're crafted from upcycled shipping containers. A very cool B&B hideaway for wine lovers and romantics in McLaren Vale.

For Foodies

  • The Louise is a cool, contemporary hotel in the heart of the Barossa Valley. Guest rooms feature modern art pieces and vineyard views, but the real highlight is the acclaimed Appellation Restaurant. Chef Daniel Murphy's tasting menus are reputedly the best in the region, and the Tscharke and Two Hands wineries are within walking distance.
  • Mount Lofty House is a romantic gem in the Adelaide Hills. Indulgent rooms & suites sit within 18 acres of lush gardens, in an 1852-built summer residence. Foodies will be thrilled by the garden-to-table ethos, with ingredients grown and foraged on site, then paired with top-notch South Australian wines.
  • Kingsford The Barossa, a restored 19th century homestead, offers seven glamorous suites. The gourmet restaurant crafts innovative dishes from local ingredients, and the exceptional private wine cellar has rare vintages from Barossa, Clare, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Sensational.
  • Sticky Rice Villas offers three airy, contemporary villas in the Adelaide Hills. Set around a popular cooking school, these are brilliant for keen foodies looking to hone their skills with private classes. Characterful, Asian-inspired and very romantic.

For an Island Escape

  • Lifetime Private Retreats offers three indulgent private villas, all overlooking Snelling's Beach on Kangaroo Island. Book the three-bedroom Cliff House for a fantastic trip with family and friends, or retreat to a one-bedroom villa to unwind as a couple. Perfect for longer self-catering stays.
  • StowAway has four cosy cabins, tucked within 250 acres of family-owned farmland close to Kangaroo Island's northern coast. Think fresh, airy interiors, a real sense of seclusion and private hot tubs for dazzling evenings under the stars. Cook up a storm in your hideaway's kitchen before curling up by the crackling woodfired stove. Romantic bliss.
  • Sea Dragon Lodge is a collection of contemporary rooms, suites and villas promising panoramic views over Pink Beach Bay. Spot wallabies from your private terrace or sink into your hot tub after delicious dinners of top-notch South Australian produce paired with local wines. Five-star style with a strong eco-conscious ethos on Kangaroo Island.

For Exceptional Luxury

  • Sequoia Lodge is a dazzling 14-bedroom retreat in the Adelaide Hills. Open-plan suites showcase original artwork by Stephen Trebilcock, and have handcrafted furnishings, swish bathrooms & private balconies with panoramic views. Enjoy gastronomic delights in your suite or at nearby Hardy's Verandah. Design-led luxury with a spa.
  • Arkaba Station sits on a private 63,000-acre conservancy close to Flinders Ranges. Reconnect with nature through the legendary Arkaba Walks, feast on gourmet fare and unwind in style at the restored 1850s homestead, which has just five guestrooms. A magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

FOR GREAT VALUE

  • The Franklin, in Adelaide, has just seven quirky rooms, each with moody, dark-painted walls and an industrial feel. Small and friendly, the hotel is set around a buzzy pub, where you can expect cracking craft ales, live music and sports broadcasts. An affordable choice with a sociable atmosphere.
  • Marion Hotel is a hip, contemporary spot in south-western Adelaide. Light-filled rooms have an industrial edge, whilst indulgent bathrooms have big, sink-into tubs. The real appeal is the convivial feel, with acoustic sessions, regular events and a lively bar. Well-priced and great for trips with friends.
