Set on France’s sun-soaked Atlantic coast, Arcachon is a charming seaside town famed for its oysters, sweeping golden beaches and relaxed atmosphere. Just an hour from Bordeaux, it’s the go-to escape for weekenders and sunseekers alike.

The best places to stay in Arcachon cater to every mood. Chic designer stays near the seafront will delight well-heeled holidaymakers, family-friendly options sit close to the beach, and cosy boutique retreats are tucked in the leafy Ville d’Hiver. Whatever your style, Arcachon makes unwinding effortless.

The Bassin d’Arcachon promises brilliant sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding. It’s also one of France’s most celebrated oyster-producing areas, so you’ll find fabulous family-owned spots selling freshly shucked oysters and cold bottles of French wine to be savoured with views over the bay. Just across the water is the narrow sliver of Cap Ferret, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and immensely popular with keen surfers.

Arcachon itself is charming. Immerse yourself in the buzz of the promenade, with its elegant hotels, boutiques and bistros, or wander through historic neighbourhoods such as the Ville d’Hiver to admire beautiful Belle Époque and Art Deco villas. The neo-Gothic Basilique Notre-Dame will thrill architecture buffs, whilst adventurers can challenge themselves to all manner of activities around the Great Dune of Pilat, Europe’s largest sand dune. Expect hiking and cycling trails, as well as ample opportunity for laid-back beach days. Chic and intimate, the best places to stay in Arcachon invite guests to kick back in idyllic surroundings.

Hugh's top tip: The best way to explore the Bassin d'Arcachon is on two wheels. Rent yourself a bike and pedal to pretty, authentic villages with colourful huts and oyster-tasting galore!
