About Ürgüp

Cappadocia's spectacular lunar-like landscape has long appealed to travellers, and Ürgüp is a fascinating destination for visitors of all ages. Created around 70 million years ago by an enormous volcanic eruption, this rare moonscape now boasts around thirty cave villages, hewn into the rock over centuries. Many of the best places to stay in Ürgüp are hidden within basalt caves and honey-hued buildings, offering visitors a slice of an incredibly unusual way of life.

The region’s fertile soil has been fought over and farmed for generations. Guided walking tours offer an insight into Cappadocia's history, including a glimpse of some of the thousand churches carved into the basalt, Delve further into the past at the Ürgüp Museum, or through visits to some of the area's smaller villages. Head to Temenni Wishing Hill for dazzling views or soar over the town on a hot air balloon ride with the whole family.

Ürgüp is famed for its sweet wine, and vineyard tours and tastings come highly recommended. Hiking and horse riding excursions are also fantastic. Return to one of the best places in Ürgüp for a soak in a traditional Turkish hammam before tucking in to delicious dinners under the stars.
