Hotel review

This gated private community with its own security force patrolling the grounds has three closely monitored entrances. As well as 247 generously sized rooms  and 1,800 villas, guests can choose to stay in the Premier Club which comprises 58 suites. This area includes a dedicated reception with exclusive bar and lounge offering complimentary canapés and appetisers. Eight restaurants dotted around the complex include Spanish, Peruvian, Italian and Mexican. Many visitors come here to play on one of the resort’s three world class, Pete Dye designed golf courses – the main one, Teeth of the Dog, is considered the Caribbean’s best course. The resort also has its own road system, marina which is home to some super-expensive yachts and the delightful replica 16th century Mediterranean village of Altos de Chavon, built by a Hollywood set designer. Now a cultural centre, it is home to artists’ studios, artisan workshops, a museum, restaurants, art galleries and a church. There is a 5,000 seat Roman style amphitheatre there too, which was opened in 1982 by none other than Frank Sinatra and which hosts top name entertainers.
