Never judge a book by its cover, as the old adage goes. Here is a hotel so unassuming and discreet from the outside you would never in your wildest dreams envisage an interior of such colour, intensity and imagination. It is all-at-once surprising, wonderful and unexpected. The result of a unique creative collaboration between Swiss philanthropist Maja Hoffman and the artist Jorge Pardo, this visionary property inventively ties together its original Roman origins with the colours and modernity of Van Gogh’s paintings with a dash of medievalism thrown in.
Over 4,000 square metres of specially commissioned floor tiles run throughout the hotel inspired by Van Gogh’s colour palette, every single bedroom door, cupboard and surface is hand painted as if an original abstract canvas, a cast concrete spiral stair with turquoise and orange filigree railings runs up the side of an exposed Roman column, literally hundreds of Kirigami-style lanterns glow-up the public spaces.
The vast bedrooms with soaring ceilings have ancient beams painted cobalt blue to offset the patterned cushions, bed throw and chairs upholstered in a joyous mix of Senegalese pagné tissé. It may all sound a tad too experimental but it somehow works and you cannot fail to be amazed. With 41 rooms this elegant Arles town house has been given new life.
The internal courtyard is a plainer and quieter outdoor space – again giving no hint of what lies beyond, whilst the swimming pool in its palm-fringed garden is a show piece with orange sides and multi-coloured tiles! This hotel buzzes with energised young staff and international (mainly adult) guests. The funky bar and restaurant perfectly fit the vibe. A stay here will not disappoint. Whether or not the décor is to your taste, it is unique and memorable.
Caroline's hot tip: Don’t miss the elegant Fragonard Musée de la Mode & Du Costume with its ever-changing displays and exhibitions relating to this iconic French brand. Also take a look at the now famous LUMA Arles – a striking steel and concrete tower designed by Frank Gehry for the Maja Hoffman Arts Foundation - a great counterpoint to the Roman arena in the centre of town.
