About Provence
Peter Mayle's books about Provence have enthralled many people into wanting to see the lavender growing in fat, straight rows, and to experience the long, drowsy lunches in picturesque medieval hilltop villages or family-run vineyards for themselves. But this charmingly rural corner of the world has been enticing and inspiring people forever. As well as offering the rural idyll accompanied by a cornucopia of delicacies, Provence also promises year round sunshine and amazing historic riches. And there are so many wonderful hotels, villas, B&Bs and farm stays that you're really spoilt for choice when it comes to our Gurus' recommendations for the best places to stay in Provence. For self-catering options, we recommend visiting our online partner, Booking.com.

Where to stay - the Top Spots
Aix en Provence is the place to be for sophistication, and is easily accessible with TGV links from Paris. Avignon is another of Provence's "must-see" cities, with its Roman bridge and the stunning Palais des Papes, whilst Uzes is slightly more off-the-beaten-track (come here for its impressive chateau and excellent farmers' markets).
Edged by the spectacular blue of the Côte d'Azur, Provence's own shades of green and terracotta have played muse for many artists (Van Gogh and Gauguin stayed together in Arles and St Remy de Provence has close links to Van Gogh as well), who've been beguiled by the light, which Matisse described as 'soft and tender, despite its brilliance'. And their legacy remains, distributed through the region's excellent museums.
But before the artists and sophisticates, there were centuries of farmers and landowners, maintaining the olive groves, dense cork-oak and pine forests and of course the vineyards.
The Romans, who founded many of the region's towns and cities, also established some of Provence's vineyards. Provence's Roman legacy also includes the world's best preserved Roman Theatre in Orange, and the Pont du Gard near Nimes, the world's largest remaining Roman-built structure. Vaison La Romaine also boasts superb ruins covering a vast area of around fifteen hectares.
What not to miss:
- If you're within reach of Avignon, you cannot miss the Palais des Papes and the Pont d'Avignon
- A trip to St Remy de Provence (not simply for its Van Gogh connections) - you'll discover some fascinating Roman ruins.
- Go for a hike in the Gorges du Verdon (Europe's answer to the USA's Grand Canyon), a stunning canyon with amazing bright green waters running through.
- Visit the flea market in Isle sur La Sorgue - it is very well known for the great antiques you can pick up.
- If you're staying close to Arles and the south of region, you have to visit the Camargue, a weird landscape of wetlands and salt flats, brimming with wildlife, and the like of which you'll see nowhere else in France!
Today's Provence is a fantastic place for foodies, wine lovers, walkers, cyclists (this is the home of Mont Ventoux, the Tour de France's 'le géant de Provence'). The best places to stay in Provence are ideal for those who like to mosey around a market, take long lunches and just stroll through beautiful medieval streets enjoying the amazing views.
The Best Places to Stay in Provence
For a country escape
- Le Mas de Peint is a country house retreat in the heart of the wild Camargue. The antique filled rooms and gourmet restaurant are a beautiful contrast to the great outdoors and wild coastline.
- Clos du Lethe is just six kilometres from historic Uzes, but this luxurious, five bedroom farmhouse conversion feels a lot further away. The decor is bare but sophisticated, making this an adult spot.
- The family-run Les Florêts at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail is set in the heart of the owners' own vineyards. The Gigondas wine that they produce is available in the restaurant where many of the dishes on offer complement it beautifully. Homely furnishings with a delightful terrace for eating outside and excellent French service.
The perfect Provençal town break
- The Hotel Crillon le Brave in Crillon le Brave is a smart hotel with fine dining in a really pretty hilltop village. A luxurious break for those who like a stunning view.
- The Château de Massillan is a beautifully renovated small chateau with turret bedrooms and elegant interiors. It's surrounded by parklands, has a lovely lake, and an excellent restaurant.
- Hostellerie Berard et Spa is a lovely hilltop hotel with an excellent spa, great wine cellar and a Michelin starred restaurant. And all in a charming village with beautiful views over the surrounding valleys.
- Nestled away in a quiet part of St Rémy de Provence, Hotel du Soleil offers understated elegance with simple colour schemes. Unwind by the pool or feel utterly rejuvenated with a trip to their deluxe spa - a great value stay.
- The charming Hostellerie Provençale is located in Uzès and offers cosy traditional accommodation. What's more, their restaurant is overseen by two Michelin trained chefs and serves up wonderful local produce!
- Le Mas des Carassins is a stone farmhouse situated in St Rémy de Provence. Surrounded by lavender bushes and lemon trees, this splendid spot offers beautiful accommodation with exposed stone walls and some even have private balconies. Quiet and romantic.
- Chateau de Mazan, once the home of the Marquis de Sade, provides simple but chic rooms in a lovely building. Enjoy wonderful meals in their two high ceilinged dining rooms. Grandeur without the stuffiness.
The Best B&Bs in Provence
- Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, Domaine les Roullets has just five rooms, but those rooms are packed with charm. Private terraces offer spectacular valley views beyond bare stone walls and a fabulous pool.
- Chateau Talaud is a chateau turned B&B, which also has five stylish rooms decorated with antiques, plus two apartments and a separate, self-catering cottage. This is a great spot for visiting both Orange and Avignon.
- Maison Felisa is located in a charming village, just 15 minutes from Avignon. The five chic rooms are done in a contemporary style and three boast jacuzzi bathtubs, plus you'll find a lovely garden with pool for relaxing by after a day out and about.
- Another B&B option would be the quirky La Ferme Rose on the outskirts of Moustiers. Its owner has a passion for collecting weird and wonderful things from soda syphons to shell lamps, all of which are incorporated into the property's design.
- L'Hôtel Sous les Figuiers is situated in the small town of St Rémy de Provence. A B&B with a difference, it doubles as an artist's workshop, where you can take painting classes if you want to release your inner Chagall.
- Apres La Sieste is a characterful B&B in the medieval village of Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres. Relax in the lovely garden by the pool with a good book. An intimate spot.
For Foodies
- La Bastide de Moustiers is a 17th Century bastide with elegant, understated interiors, lovely gardens and terraces and a restaurant menu by Alain Ducasse.
- If you want to eat well, but also learn something about what you're eating then Château de Berne is for you. Surrounded by 1,500 acres of private vineyards, they offer wine tastings and cookery classes.
- La Mirande in Avignon is an immaculately decorated former Cardinal's mansion right in the heart of town, with a Michelin starred restaurant and sumptuous rooms.
- L'Artemise is a heavenly gastronomic restaurant with rooms on a hillside just outside Uzes, with lovely views and a lovely garden. The 'surprise' menu changes daily.
- Le Clos de la Glycine offers sweeping valley views and shabby chic accommodation in a quiet setting. Enjoy splendid dinners served up at their fine-dining restaurant and head off wine tasting around the local area.
- La Capitelle is a B&B brimming with charm in the village of Mirmande. It provides spacious and comfortable accommodation with valley views, whilst their restaurant offers up sumptuous gastronomic cuisine.
- The hilltop Hostellerie Berard Et Spa offers chic accommodation with lovely views and private balconies. Plus, you can join in with cooking classes or simply sit back and enjoy the exquisite dishes served by their Michelin-star restaurant!

Travel Information
- Each season brings its own unique charm, but it's probably best to visit Provence in the summertime with its long sunny days, the sound of chirping cicadas in the background and evening meals on the terrace. In July and August the temperature climbs up to a daily average of 30°C, so there's no shame in opting for an after lunch siesta when the sun is at its hottest.
- International visitors can fly into Marseille Provence Airport, Nice Côte d'Azur Airport or Toulon-Hyères Airport.
- For car hire prices, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
