Lying midway between Zadar and Split, Šibenik, with its magnificent Unesco-listed cathedral and three sturdy fortresses, is a less-visited but rather rewarding destination. Built into a hillside, overlooking a sheltered sea channel, the pedestrian-only old town is a labyrinth of cobbled alleys and stone stairways. Here, the Heritage Life Palace occupies a carefully-renovated Renaissance palazzo with 17 comfortable guest rooms. Expect white period furniture, wall frescoes, gilt-framed mirrors, and brocade curtains tied with tassels – the nicest rooms have small stone balconies. On the top floor you have a mini-wellness offering Finnish sauna, Jacuzzi, massage and facials.
Downstairs, next to reception, there's a breakfast room where the morning buffet is displayed, and a cafe with outdoor tables on the square in summer. Staff at reception are super friendly - they'll recommend local restaurants (if you feel like splashing out, ask them to resave a table at Michelin-starred Pelegrini, opposite the Cathedral), and will also help arrange excursions to Split or Zadar, or to the nearby national parks of Krka and the Kornati.
Jane's Hot Tip: Catch a local ferry to the nearby little islands of Zlarin and Prvić
