“A unique retreat in a 19th-century fortress on a tiny island at the mouth of Kotor Bay. The decor blends original stone elements with minimalist furnishing, creating a timelessly on-trend vibe. With three restaurants, three outdoor pools and a magnificent spa, this island haven has it all covered.”

Hotel review

You'd be hard pressed to find another hotel in a setting as glorious as Mamula. In a sturdy stone fortress, built by Austro-Hungary in 1853 to defend the entrance to Kotor Bay, it perches on a tiny island with panoramic views over the Adriatic Sea and the mountains of the Montenegrin mainland. Abandoned for decades, it was meticulously renovated and opened as a 5-star hotel in 2023.

Guests arrive by motorboat then enter the fort through an arched gateway with a wooden drawbridge. Inside, it centres on a vast courtyard with three pools and an all-day bar-restaurant. The fort's main tower now houses a lush Banyan Tree Spa doing sauna, massage, beauty treatments, flotation therapy, yoga and sound therapy, and there's a small rock-and-pebble beach with sun beds down by the motorboat landing station. The 32 rooms range from Adriatic Balcony rooms with private terraces and wide sea views, to cavernous Junior Suites with vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework – all come with hip contemporary furnishing. A very special experience, with tailor-made tours and activities on offer too.
