“Pestana Cidadela Cascais - Citadel Historic Hotel and Art District is set within a 16th century fortress in this seaside town. A mini city within itself, this luxurious, beautifully designed hotel comes with chic spa, stunning rooms and six galleries showing the work of resident and visiting artists”

Hotel review

This 16th-century Citadel of Cascais sits right on the Atlantic, with the marina shimmering below, and elegant Cascais just a five-minute walk behind it.

The Cidadela Art District (the first of its kind in Europe) fills the property with galleries, residency studios and ateliers. Some digs are even reimagined as Author Rooms by well-known guest creatives. The lobby bar made this English Literature grad happy, stacked with novels and area guides, bookish down to its menu. Nearby is Déjà Lú, Portugal's first philanthropic bookshop.

The 110 rooms (and 23 suites) are spacious and light-filled with contemporary artwork; some overlook the historic inner courtyard, others the gardens or the water (light sleepers should bring earplugs: the whistling wind and seagulls can be distracting). The vast spaces can feel a bit cold at times, but the pools - both the indoor option overlooking the marina and the outdoor pool in the Paiol Garden - warm things up nicely. The spa and gym are compact, but have everything you need.

Taberna da Praça serves traditional Portuguese petiscos along with a good wine list; next door, Manteigaria Silva does cheeses, cured meats and preserves. For breakfast, Maris Stella overlooks the marina beautifully. Guincho Beach, a surfer's paradise, is just 6km away.
