Location doesn't get much better than this. Perched on The Scores with sweeping views over the West Sands, Seaton House sits right next door to the R&A Golf Club - you can practically hear the click of clubs from the first tee and watch players finishing their rounds on the legendary 18th green. For golfers making their pilgrimage to the home of the game, this is hallowed ground.

The hotel has undergone a thoughtful refurbishment, with rooms that have been brought thoroughly up to date. The junior garden terrace suites occupy a modern extension and strike a comfortable contemporary note, while thoughtful touches like books on Scotland and golf remind you where you are. Bathrooms are well-appointed with good amenities, and if you're lucky enough to bag a sea-facing room, prepare for views that'll have you lingering over your morning coffee.

What really lifts Seaton House above the ordinary is the enthusiasm of the young staff, many of them students from St Andrews University, who bring genuine warmth to their service. The star turn is Ondine Oyster & Grill, which specialises in fish and has developed quite a following – book ahead. Bow Butts Bar buzzes with a warm and convivial atmosphere and draws locals as well as guests, always a promising sign and The Board Room serves all day modern pub favourites.

This is a hotel that knows its audience: Americans and Europeans keen on golf, and parents visiting their student offspring. It delivers exactly what both groups want – comfort, location, and that intangible sense of being at the very heart of the St Andrews' story.
