Everyone loves Hvar, Dalmatia's most fashionable island, blessed with rugged seaward slopes, lush vineyards and fragrant lavender fields. The top destination, Hvar Town, is a cluster of centuries-old stone buildings rimming a Venetian-era harbour, surveyed by a hilltop castle. Its cobbled alleys are packed with fancy seafood restaurants, hip wine bars and boutiques selling beachwear and handmade jewellery – absolutely gorgeous, but it does get very crowded. If you're looking for a quieter off-the-radar retreat, the Sirena could well be the solution. Lying 2km west of town (served by complimentary shuttle-bus and a dock for boat arrivals), the resort centres on a pebble beach with wooden decks, sunbeds and parasols, and dreamy views of the Pakleni islands. Adjoining the spa, there's a raised level open-air infinity pool, enjoying similar vistas.

Rooms and suites, with modern design in calming creams and beiges, are dispersed across five pavilions dating from the 1960's, set amid pines, olive trees and oleander. You'll start the day with a superb buffet breakfast including tasty cooked-to-order options, and close it with sunset cocktails, followed by creative Mediterranean fare at dinner – black risotto (made from cuttlefish ink), grilled sea bass, and fresh seasonal salads. While you're here, the concierge can arrange a host of activities around the island, including guided sightseeing in Hvar Town, private skippered sailing excursions to other nearby islands, self-guided cycling trips, winery visits and Dalmatian cookery classes.
