This traditional, 17th-century, whitewashed building, in an enviable location overlooking the quiet Winster valley, is a Lakeland landmark. Although only three miles from the touristy hustle of Lake Windermere, the place feels to be in a tranquil and different world. It’s all a pub should be with low-beamed ceilings, flagged or wooden floors, open fires and cosy snugs with mis-matched chairs and scrubbed tables. The bedrooms, in converted outbuildings and cottages (the latter offer a self-catering option), have a simple, contemporary-rustic style with stripped-wood floors and chunky wooden furniture with splashes of colour in tartan throws and curtains. Some might find them a little spare but all have a patio (private or shared). Food, which can be eaten in the lively bar or in smarter dining-rooms upstairs, is well-executed pub classics. There’s a good choice of local ales and gins including the local damson gin. The best part is to return from a long walk and rest your weary legs with a glass of your favourite tipple while enjoying the valley-sweeping view from the (heated) terrace.
