Hotel Review

Although close to the A1 major north-south route, the village of Felton feels anything but rushed. And The Northumberland Arms, overlooking the village’s old stone bridge over the River Coquet, is also a leisurely sort of place. Built in the 1820s as a coaching inn for visitors to the Duke of Northumberland’s home - nearby Alnwick Castle - it’s a solid stone building with two rather grand bay projections. Inside, it’s gone for the smart but relaxed rustic look: flagged floors, exposed stone walls and wood-burning stoves in huge fireplaces with lots of scrubbed tables, mis-matched school-chairs and velvet-covered Chesterfields. The bar is the focus - local drinkers gather at one end - with a warren of different eating areas spread around. Menus offer a mix of pub classics and modern British dishes; hearty and simple with a leaning to game. Six large bedrooms have a country-house feel done with a chic, designer’s eye and with a smart sense of fun. Antiques and vintage pieces mix with faux-fur throws and statement wallpapers. Battered trunks stand in for bedside tables; two rooms have egg-shaped baths in the bedrooms, another has a bath poised by the window. Bathrooms are ultra-modern. Its closeness to the A1 means beaches, castles and Alnwick Garden are readily accessible. Return to a hearty meal and a pint of locally brewed real ale in your stylish hideaway.
