1 Hotel Central Park is of the moment, the zeitgeist. Hours of time have been spent (not wasted) on creating a 29 storey building in the centre of Manhattan as an eco-conscious and super friendly bolt hole. Looking at the occupancy rate, it's a success. There's no hair shirt here, just a sensible call to arms that we can be more thoughtful in the way we live and still have a great time, in fact a luxurious one too.

A room's a room? Bed, bathroom, cupboard, desk, decor etc but at 1 Hotel Central Park there's a little bit more to it - recycled bricks, headboards, 100% organic cotton mattresses, natural fibre linens, filtered tap water in refillable bottles, wooden shower timers, compressed cardboard hangers, chalk and slate for notes and best of all 1 Less Thing - an encouragement to leave behind unwanted clothes or anything, all of which will be found a new home. Book a room with a magical window nook seat for quiet contemplation of the New York skyline and even Central Park, otherwise grab the thoughtfully provided yoga mat for your own brand of peace. And if you want to be more active, regular exercise classes or personal trainers are available.

The ground floor is given over to the stand up reception, quiet and comfortable corners for meetings or relaxation, a busy bar and restaurant under the supervision of Jonathan Waxman, the farm to table pioneer. It's an area which seems to adapt effortlessly depending on the time of day, one moment gentle chatter whether important business or frivolous gossip, the next the buzz of a crowd enjoying the excitements of the day at the bar, joined by diners looking for good, fresh sustainable food.
