About New York State
Encompassing 55,000 square miles of spectacular lake and mountain scenery and one huge, buzzing, vibrant metropolis New York State is a study in contrast. New York City is the kind of place we pretty much all want to experience for ourselves. It dominates popular culture and has done for years, but if you confine your visit to New York State to the five boroughs then you’re missing out on the tranquil, sometimes pristine, beauty of pretty much the rest of the state. This crazy contrast is visible in the best places to stay in New York State as well - from city digs to historic homesteads and elegant beach-side escapes.
Some of our New York State Collections:
- Best Midtown and Uptown Manhattan Hotels
- Best Manhattan Hotels
- The Best Places to Stay on Long Island
- Escape to the Hamptons
- The Best Hotels for the Catskills
- If you are venturing to Long Island check out our recommendations in East Hampton, Bridgehampton, Shelter Island or Sag Harbor.
- For the Hudson Valley we've found some great hotels in Woodstock or Hudson.
- If you're heading further upstate you'll need to check out our selections in Albany and Saratoga Springs.
- If you plan to take a look at the Niagara Falls from the US side of the border stay in Buffalo, or just over an hour away in Rochester.
- Or find fabulous skiing in Lake Placid.
From majestic mountains, to rust-belt cities, from lakes to rolling pastoral farmlands and vineyards, New York State is full of extreme differences and incredible views. It’s also rich with history, known for its art, culture and cuisine - and shopping. So why are so few of us exploring beyond The City?
From the magical peace of Long Island to the Hudson Valley, Niagara to the Catskills and the Capital/Saratoga district, the Adirondacks, Finger Lakes and Thousand Islands Seaway, this constantly surprising heartland has so much to love and is ripe for every kind of traveller.
What not to Miss
- The City: from the crowds wondering and wandering in Times Square to the panoramic views from the observatory deck in the iconic Empire State Building and the famed works at the Museum of Modern Art. Then there’s Central Park, Broadway and of course, the Statue of Liberty. Grand Central Station, the Rockefeller Centre, Fifth Avenue…
- It’s another obvious one, but Niagara Falls is pretty darn impressive. The sheer volume of water careening over the edge and plummeting downwards, then spraying icy mist like vast clouds all around is unlike anything else on the planet.
- The string of seaside villages and hamlets on the south fork of Long Island are the enticing, glamorous, summer holiday towns of many films and stories about The Hamptons. Just as sunny, sandy and glamorous as you remember. Or for something similar you might consider the Thousand Islands, close tot he Canadian border.
- If you prefer the snow then the snow-sport-lovers-paradise, Lake Placid and the Adirondack Mountains - 46 peaks over 4,000 feet - are for you.
- If you’ve heard about The Foliage and want to know what all the fuss is about The Catskills is where you need to be. This great plateau worn into mountains and valleys is extremely beautiful, but it’s also been wonderfully preserved and promoted by the work of the Hudson Valley School painters.
- If you’re here for the history then the Hudson Valley is quite a lot like New England.
- And New York State is known for having more than its fair share of 'Halls of Fame', if that's the kind of thing you think you could get into...
From the fabulous skiing in Lake Placid (host of the 1980 Winter Olympics) to other strenuously outdoorsy walking and water-borne experiences, to the romantic, to the kid-friendly and supremely relaxing - the best places to stay in New York State reflect that wonderful diversity right on the doorstep of one of the world’s great cities.
Classic New York
- Long an uptown landmark, The Mark, value adds to its park side location with an award winning restaurant and a world renowned hairdresser. 'Stylish' doesn't do the decor by Jacques Grange enough credit.
- The Lowell Hotel is perfect if you're looking for classic, intimate luxury. The bathrooms are marble, the colour pallet draws from nature, the lobby is well dressed and the staff will all know you by name after your first nights stay.
- The Algonquin Hotel opened its doors in 1902 and has been doing a roaring trade ever since. The decor is gorgeous, an antique lover's dream, and they even still have a hotel cat - her name is Matilda.
- City Club Hotel is an impressive former gentleman's club preserving the glamour and style as a hotel just minutes from Times Square and Broadway.
Close to The City
- The Inn at Great Neck affords guests access to the best of the city and Long Island. The interiors are Art Deco inspired and there are 85 creamy-goldy rooms. Ideal if you’re looking for a small luxurious hotel.
Quintessential Long Island
- c/o The Maidstone is an eclectic Scandinavian inspired hotel in East Hampton with 19 individually designed rooms and beautiful private gardens. There’s also a wonderful American-Scandinavian restaurant and yoga classes offered in The Buddha Relaxation Garden.
- The American Hotel in Sag Harbour has just eight rooms, done up with American antiques and private bathrooms. There’s also a popular and lively restaurant with an award winning wine list and a 75 foot hotel boat.
- Bridgehampton’s Bridgehampton Inn is a homely, yet luxurious ten room hotel with a French cuisine inspired restaurant, a glorious private patio and some lovely antiques.
For a luxurious rural retreat
- One of the grandest properties in the 6 million-acre Adirondack Park, Whiteface Lodge, Lake Placid is a byword for homely luxury. It is only a couple of decades old but is the elite choice for winter sports, spa experiences and soaking up the grandeur of the mountain scenery in all seasons.
- Oheka Castle, Huntingdon, Long Island, was built by a Gatsby-like figure in 1919 as the backdrop to his lavish parties, and this astonishing French chateau and its gorgeous formal gardens dominate Long Island’s gold coast. Surely one of the US’s grandest and most distinctive historic hotels, winning multiple awards for service.
- More European-inspiration is in evidence at the Mirbeau Inn and Spa, Skaneateles. This one taking its cute landscaping cues from the paintings of Monet and other French painters. World class spa and fitness centre, fine dining and all a short drive from Rochester and Syracuse.
- Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton is a wonderfully grand converted mansion with 22 spacious rooms and an on-site farm which feeds the Tom Colicchio run restaurant. There’s also an outdoor pool and spa, a gym and complimentary bike hire.
For upstate exploration
- Looking like a quaint British country pub, located deep in the Finger Lakes wine country, Morgan Samuels Inn, a delightful early19th century house with a strong historical backstory, offers a distinctive away-from-it-all welcome, in which fire-lit rooms, stunning views and sophisticated cuisine are just some of the elements that make up a magical experience.
- A grand Victorian mansion and the city’s original and award-winning boutique hotel, The Mansion on Delaware Avenue, Buffalo is the ideal location to explore this attractive city. Perfect for the Niagara Falls and that great American arts treasure house the Albright-Knox gallery.
- Formerly a university club building, The Inn on Broadway, Rochester, is a relatively recent development that has already built up a strong following in this pleasant academic town on the shores of Lake Ontario. Old world charm is retained, though modern conveniences abound.
For a weekend escape
- Why not try The Graham & Co, an authentic and unpretentious Catskills experience, just a couple of hours from NYC. Swimming pool, hammocks… need we say more?
- Or for something a bit more upmarket, how about The Quogue Club at Quogue, in the Hamptons. Lovely location, great sea views, and only 90 mins from downtown.
- Southampton’s A Butler's Manor is a historic, five room, family-run inn offering friendly service and exquisite breakfasts. Its charming, English style garden and welcoming pool make it perfect for a great value city getaway.
For a self-catering Apartment or Villa
If you’d prefer to stay in an apartment or private villa we recommend you visit our online partner, booking.com.
- New York State’s main international airports are John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens, Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey, LaGuardia Airport in Queens, Buffalo Niagara International Airport in Cheektowaga, Greater Rochester International Airport, Syracuse Hancock International Airport and Albany International Airport.
- If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
- New York State is known as a ‘four season state’, meaning there’s something to charm about each distinct season. Many visitors come during the summer, but there’s skiing in winter, wonderful autumnal colours and spring has lovely weather. So your reason for visiting should really be the deciding factor when thinking about what time of year to travel.
