Hotel Review

This opulent low-rise complex echoes the palace architecture of the Minoan empires or perhaps ancient Egypt. Palms, reflecting pools and waterfalls set the scene on arrival. Colonnades link bungalows and villa suites – some with private pools and palm-shaded gardens – with the central hotel building and bars, restaurants, shops and pools. There's a semi-private sandy beach where you can lounge in your own white canvas gazebo, and brightly coloured animal figures dotted around the lawns add a playful note. Great food from all over the world in nine restaurants and bars, including contemporary-Italian Minotaur, graced by original Picasso ceramics, a floating deck in a vast infinity pool, and the laid-back Sunset Lounge. The Elixir spa pampers with Ayurvedic treatment. Location, a 10-15 minute ride from the airport and 20 minutes from ancient Knossos, is a plus. Perfect for a luxurious short break for couples and families.
