Search the best hotels in Crete
It's difficult to recommend the best places to stay in Crete because this largest of the Greek islands has such varied appeals. Archaeology and mythology go up against inviting seas and sandy beaches and the rugged, traditional interior, much loved by walkers contradicts the bright nightlife of the capital, Heraklion.
Crete is a naturally diverse beauty. She's got rugged mountain ranges, slicing gorges and fertile plains. (ideal for those looking to get away from it all, or simply those who want a walking holiday). And those beautiful beaches.
But of course Crete is also great if you just want a cheap, fun, sunny break - the properties listed below start from as little as £60 a night! You'll find a range of little guesthouses and B&Bs, or self catering village style options (which are often perfect for families).
Many of Crete's best beach hotels and some of the best hotels if you're looking for luxury and a spa, can be found in the popular resorts of Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. But if you look carefully you can also discover some hidden gems on the lesser know South Coast, or undeveloped Lasithi in the East of the island.
What not to Miss
- Visitors come just to see the Minoan palace at Knossos - home of the minotaur and his labyrinth. But that's only the start of Crete's list of ancient treasures. Heraklion is closest to Knossos, it's also close to the ancient Minoan villa of Vathypetro and its wine press. And the Historical Museum of Crete and Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Heraklion is also where to come for the nightlife, not just for shopping, bars and dancing, also for enjoying renowned local cuisine. The long waterfront brims with hectic life, and the historic centre hums with busy charm.
- Chania, on Crete's north west coast, is the best place to stay if you want to visit Polyrinia, one of the most fortified towns in ancient Greece. It's also home to a historic market and impressive Archaeological Museum. Chania's harbour is magnificent, and it's easy to see why the Venetians and Turks built their great and beautiful cities here. In addition to the beautiful Old Town, Chania also has a Naval Museum and several other museums. And loads of interesting churches. And an olive press. Perfect for culture vultures!
- Rethymno ticks all the boxes if you're in search of both culture and relaxation: it's full of well preserved Venetian and Ottoman treasures and you'll find a long, sandy beach.
Don't forget that the island is incredibly busy during the peak summer months, so if you want to be sure of a bed in one of the best places to stay in Crete from June to September you’ll need to book well ahead.
For Ancient Treasures
- An historic castle-turned-guesthouse, Casa Vitae's original Ottoman-Venetian architecture makes it one of the best places to stay in Rethymno for anyone wanting to really immerse themselves in the history of the place. As well as sleeping between ancient walls, and in some cases four poster beds, you're also only minutes from the archaeological museum, the fortress and the old Venetian harbour.
- History buffs may appreciate Metohi Kindelis, 3km from the centre of Chania, an antique Venetian farm converted into manor-house-hotel.
- The Mythos Suites, situated in the centre of Rethynno, is a gem for families who want to self cater. Though you may find you don't need to use the small kitchens as much as you thought - the breakfast spread here is amazing. Friendly, clean, light and close to the historic highlights.
Best for Hikers
- Milia Village is an amazing group of old houses in a remote mountain eyrie. Only 13 rooms with communal kitchen and dining. Book here if you want to experience Crete's hiking culture.
- Hidden in a valley, the White River Cottages are ideal if you want to feel like you're on your own. But you also want to enjoy some traditional holiday facilities - like a pool and local tavernas 15 mins walk away.
- Aspros Potamos are a collection of traditional stone cottages using renewable energy sources within easy reach of beaches, mountains and walking trails.
- Cressa Ghitonia is in the remote Lasithi region of Crete, with its traditional stone houses and charming spa it provides the perfect base for walkers and nature lovers.
For Archaeology & Mythology
Crete, the home of the Gods and some of the most important Greek myths is a treasure trove of archaeological and mythical sites. Here's our pick of the best places to stay in Crete if you want to explore these fascinating sites:

- If you’d prefer to stay in an apartment or private villa we recommend you visit our online partner, booking.com.
- Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport is about five kilometres outside Heraklion, and is Crete's main airport. Alternatively you can try Chania Airport, about 14kms out of Chania in the Akrotiri region. Flights into Chania are mostly domestic, but there are European charter flights during the summer months.

- If you want to hire a car - which we advise if you want to get out and about exploring - we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
- The peak season for visiting Crete is between April and October, but the best times are probably late spring/ early summer or early autumn - it’ll be a bit quieter then and the weather won’t be as scorching as it can be mid-summer!.
