Šibenik is probably best known for its splendid Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral, and its sturdy fortress hosting open-air concerts each summer. Here, on a peninsula 3km/2mi from the old town (served by hotel boat and shuttle bus in high season), D-Resort was designed by local architect Nikola Bašić and opened in 2015. Expect lots of raw exposed in-situ concrete, contemporary furnishing and quirky artworks. The 63 rooms and six suites have wooden floors, super-comfy beds, polished concrete bathrooms, and espresso coffee machines.
I had an excellent breakfast at the top-floor Art restaurant, with superb Adriatic views, a generous buffet spread, and eggs cooked-to-order. The restful spa does massage and beauty treatments, and has a splendid white marble hamam and Finnish sauna, and opens onto an outdoor infinity pool, overlooking the 452-berth marina. The concierge can help you arrange private boat trips to the blissful islets of Kornati National Park, or to Skradin and the waterfalls of Krka National Park. Children will love these trips too, and there's a kids' club at the hotel offering activities and entertainment.
