“An iconic 1920s hotel set in the heart of the city near Passeig de Gràcia. Interiors are elegant and classic with chandeliers, original paintings, and high ceilings. With several dining options and a luxury spa - this is a spoiling city stay.”

Hotel review

Signature crimson drapes cascade down El Palace Barcelona’s grand facade, where liveried doormen mark the gateway to a bygone era. Stepping in from the prestigious Eixample district, mere steps from the Gothic Quarter, one becomes the latest distinguished character to grace the storied establishment, founded as a Ritz property in 1919. Versailles-style ornate furniture sets the stage in The Hall, which leads through to El Jardín, a spectacular atrium serving a breakfast spread of cured meats and fluffy eggs fit for royalty. The theme of theatrical opulence continues within Amar restaurant's soaring navy walls, culinary artistry reaching its zenith with signature dishes like El Bulli-inspired crayfish carpaccio. The sun-soaked rooftop pool offers respite, while the rooftop cinema combines culture and killer views on warm evenings. Descend to the basement to find a jazz speakeasy pulsing with atmosphere - the first indicator of the property's surprisingly rock ‘n’ roll soul. Further proof: past guests include Madonna and McCartney, and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood maintains his own personally-designed Art Deco suite here (bookable when he’s not around).

Palatial Suites will leave you feeling like a rock star, coming complete with personal butlers so meticulous they'll unpack your belongings with white gloves, then share their WhatsApp for 24-hour service. For those seeking old-world charm over modern minimalism, El Palace delivers a world-class experience steeped in grandeur.

  • Why do people love staying in at El Palace Barcelona?

El Palace Barcelona is a truly historic property with more than a century of stories to tell. Over the decades, it has welcomed countless prominent figures from the worlds of art, culture, politics, and entertainment. Guests are drawn to the hotel’s timeless elegance: it preserves the essence and grandeur of its past while offering all the comfort and sophistication of a modern five‑star experience. The hotel is also deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of the city, and staying here feels like stepping into a living chapter of Barcelona’s history.

  • Which are your most popular room types, and why?

Our Superior Rooms are particularly popular, as they are located on the higher floors and some feature charming small balconies, such as those on the sixth floor, which allow guests to enjoy unique views and a sense of privacy. Even more popular are our Art Suites and Palace Suites. These rooms are not only spacious and beautifully appointed in a refined, classic style, but each one is also dedicated to a historical figure who has left a mark on the hotel. Guests often remark on how special it feels to stay in a suite inspired by such personalities, as it allows them to connect with the hotel’s rich heritage in a very personal way. It is, in many ways, a journey through time.

  • What facilities do you have for children, and can you fit extra beds in your rooms?

Although we do not have a dedicated children’s playroom, our Art Suites and Palace Suites offer generous living rooms where they can play. We can also provide charming teepees in the rooms, creating a playful and memorable setting for younger guests. In addition, extra beds can be arranged in all room categories except the Classic Rooms.

  • What message would you like to give The Hotel Guru readers?

To step into El Palace Barcelona is to do far more than simply check into a hotel. It is to become part of a legacy, an icon that has witnessed the evolution of the city and welcomed some of the most remarkable figures of the past century. Here, every corridor and every suite tell a story. We invite guests not only to stay with us but to experience first‑hand the living history and timeless charm that make El Palace Barcelona an unforgettable destination in the heart of the city.

  • What is there to do in the area?

We’re located in Barcelona’s Eixample district, just five minutes from Passeig de Gràciaand Gaudí’s Casa Batlló, right in the heart of the city’s cultural and shopping scene. From here, you can easily explore some of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks, stroll through charming streets lined with boutiques and cafés or simply soak in the local atmosphere. Whether you're interested in architecture, fashion, gastronomy, or art, you'll find it all just steps from our doors.

  • What kind of breakfast do you offer?

We offer both buffet and à la carte breakfast with a variety of international and local options, served daily in our beautiful Breakfast Garden. The space has a timeless charm, with black-and-white tones, wrought iron touches, and lush greenery climbing the walls which make it an oasis of calm in the middle of the city.

  • Do you offer other meals?

Throughout the day, guests can enjoy a variety of dining experiences. In the Great Hall, guests will find seasonal dishes, traditional tapas, and our classic British Afternoon Tea served in an elegant and relaxed setting. For a more casual atmosphere with stunning views, the Rooftop Garden is an urban oasis where you can enjoy lunch, dinner, or cocktails while taking in the panoramic views over the city. For a true gastronomic experience, Amar Barcelona, our signature restaurant led by chef Rafa Zafra, celebrates the essence of Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on local and seasonal products.

  • And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?

Gastronomy is an integral part of our daily life here in Barcelona,  it’s a wonderful way to share and celebrate our local culture. Here is a selection of our favourite restaurants in the city:

Xiringuito Escribà is perfect for enjoying a traditional paella right by the Mediterranean Sea, with a relaxed, seaside atmosphere. Els Pescadors is a beloved classic, known for its expertly prepared fish and rice dishes. And in the heart of the city, Compartir Barcelona offers a unique fine dining experience in a relaxed and welcoming setting, where creativity and quality go hand in hand.
