“This family-run, minimalist hotel sits on a quiet residential street in Mantua, about a 10 minute walk from the centre, with local restaurants close by. Service is genuinely warm, and breakfast is worth stretching out for—especially in the sheltered courtyard when the pace slows right down.”

Hotel review

Hot tip: A lakeside walk makes a lovely contrast after the excesses of the city’s architecture. Try the stretch from Via Fondamenta round to Piazza Mulina, and return to the city centre through the gardens of Piazza Virgiliana.

This hotel is so discreet, you might mistake the small red awning over its entrance to indicate a neighbourhood bar. But behind its neat and modest pale-grey façade are surprisingly modern and minimalist spaces: creamy-cool floors and walls, art books in the small lounge, funky red lampshades in the bar, and pop art in the glass-walled breakfast room overlooking a sleek hidden courtyard.

Bedrooms, spread over three floors, share the same neat monochrome style with dark-wood floors, pale-grey walls, black chrome-legged tables, and simple cream blinds. Bold designer lighting and big striped headboards add careful colour and interest. Some rooms are quite compact – not an issue if you’re out and about all day – but do ask if you like space to spread out. Also ask if you’d prefer a quieter room at the back or if you’d rather have a view from the front. All rooms have spacious bathrooms with good lighting.

Staff – one of the stand-out features - go out of their way to make sure guests feel comfortable. The other stand-out feature is the breakfast, not a meal Italians usually bother about. Here, it’s a feast of fresh fruit, yoghurts, locally baked bread, croissants, cakes and pastries. Even scrambled eggs. Just what’s needed for a day exploring this Renaissance gem of a city.
