“Sleek city stay near Dublin’s Grafton Street with eco credentials to match its style. Art Deco flourishes meet Georgian bones inside, with bold wallpaper, moody lighting and polished finishes. There’s a buzzing bar, bistro dining, and even afternoon tea. Chic, smart and surprisingly green”

First look: New Dublin hotel fully powered by unde

Europe’s “first sustainable hotel” opens in Dublin today. The Iveagh Garden on Harcourt Street will source all of its energy from an underground river, running 50 metres below the hotel. Large turbines will convert power from the river Swan to meet all of the hotel’s energy requirements.

The review:The Iveagh Garden Hotel, Dublin

Billed as Europe's first sustainable hotel, Iveagh Garden opened in February and generates its electricity, heating and cooling requirements from an underground river 50 metres below the property. Other energy-saving measures include a gravity-fed wastewater system, motion-activated lighting and low-energy lifts. The result is a 78 per cent decrease in energy usage and an 82 per cent reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to the building's previous incarnation as an office space.
