Hotel Review

Compared with other world capitals, Rome has traditionally been poorly served by upmarket hotels of character. The independently owned Palazzo Ripetta, having undergone a 40m EUR restoration in the early 2020s, is a welcome new addition to this select group. Formerly a convent and a school for the poor children of the neighbourhood, this elegant building on Via Ripetta has been transformed into a supremely comfortable and stylish haven from the heat and bustle of the city. A top architect was retained for the restoration, and it shows, with high quality detailing, generous room proportions, and harmonious lines. Downstairs, a bright reception area leads through to a charming courtyard garden with a fountain tinkling into an antique Roman sarcophagus. In days gone by, the convent children used to play and exercise here. Today it's popular for dining in fine weather, and from time to time offers live music.

Dining options come in the form of an excellent restaurant which is full of character, the walls lined with old photographs and menus from its previous incarnation. It also boasts its own bakery, the chefs on view baking bread and pastries for the excellent breakfasts served in the morning. Next door, a bar with its own mixologist caters for residents and locals alike. A highlight is the beautifully designed sitting room, lined with art books, paintings and Murano glass. In fact paintings and sculptures abound throughout the hotel, from the collection of the owner. Beyond is the former convent chapel, now the Salone Bernini, a large and muralled exhibition and seminar space.

Upstairs, rooms range from standard doubles through junior suites to suites of rooms that can be connected together for families or groups, with their own hallways and dedicated entrances. All are generously sized, even the entry level doubles, with high ceilings on the lower floors, and large, bright windows overlooking the street or the courtyard. All are triple glazed, ensuring a good night's sleep. They come in four colourways, each elegantly co-ordinated with a mix of Murano glass chandeliers, specially designed lacquer-style furniture, Frette linens and Ortigia products. Beds and pillows are supremely comfortable. Most have large walk-in showers, and seven rooms have bath tubs, so make sure you specify if you'd like one.

All in all, this independent boutique is an excellent choice for a romantic break or a luxurious business stay in the heart of the historic city. The Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain are all within easy walking distance, and the Borghese Gallery, the Tiber and the Piazza del Populo are on its doortstep.
