Hotel review

Lisbon’s former Ministry of Internal Affairs was restored and opened as an elegant pousada in 2015. Occupying the North West corner of the magnificent neo-classical Praca Commercial and overlooking the mighty Tagus river estuary, you could not pick a more grandiose or exhilarating spot to stay in Lisbon. Fine antiques, prints and artefacts lent by the Musee National (including two marvellous 16th century sedan chairs) furnish the lobby and reception areas. A baronial stairway and wide light filled corridors lead to the bedrooms which are fuss-free, modern and sleek with bare wooden floors and restful colours. The in-room bathrooms are neatly designed behind frosted glass - and there are loads of lovely crisp white Portuguese linens of course. RIB, the hotel restaurant and wine bar, is a trendy and cosmopolitan hangout but outside on the square you will find numerous tempting places to eat and drink as well. This is the perfect base for a minibreak. Walk the city from here – or take a tram. You will be entranced! Great service too. Highly recommended.
