Unlike King Henry the VIII, under whose reign The Close was built, this property has only improved with age. Commanding a prime position in the historic town of Tetbury its austere grey stone facade is softened by wisteria-draped walls. Like a modern adaptation of a Shakespearean play this property refers to its history through modern means. Antlers adorn the walls accompanied by contemporary paintings of beagles and wildlife. A huge, wrought iron candelabra hangs above stylish, herringbone chairs. In the bedrooms furnishings reference Tudor shapes, though arched headboards are made of brightly coloured floral fabrics rather than ageing oak. Large bathrooms enjoy country views, roll top baths and design novelties such as a chess board for a side table. The period juxtaposition continues at The Brasserie where hearty dishes are served with the modern flair of a AA Rosette awarded restaurant. Expect locally sourced, seasonal British and Continental dishes and even a slice of battenberg with the afternoon tea. Perambulate the quintessential English country garden on a pleasant afternoon.

In the heart of Tetbury, not far from its 16th-century marketplace, you will find the distinguished grey stone façade of the Close Hotel. It’s been in various hands over the years, including those of Sir Richard Branson, who ran it as his flagship hotel in the 1980s. A recent acquisition and revamp by Cotswold Inns & Hotels has brought an upbeat look to the bar and lounge, with modern paintings, designer lighting and comfy leather armchairs.
