This old family house once served as a neighbourhood grocery and barber shop - now reimagined as a riverside haven. Homebaked lime cakes, pastel de nata and eggs are served in The Market, a nod to its community roots. The owners’ handiwork is everywhere: an apothecary cabinet doubling as reception desk, surrounded by plants and an old-fashioned record player. Rooms are sprayed with their own 100% organic perfume range (lavender and wood, if you're after a recommendation), and softly produced linens lend tranquillity.

The majestic infinity pool overlooking the Douro River is one of the most inviting I've encountered - plans for two full city days evaporated, replaced by wine, sunshine, and garden picnics overlooking jet skis pulling wheelies in the far distance. Fire up the sauna when you're ready to switch pace. A booklet in each room details things to do, if you do manage to pry yourself off the sunlounger.
