Mike Wormersley used to have a Michelin star, but he gave it up in order to cook “what my customers really like to eat” in this entirely unpretentious inn which has consequently gained an impressive reputation for excellent, locally sourced dishes both in the New Forest and beyond. With delicious beef, game and wild mushrooms in season on the menu, plus Jayne Womersley’s unmissable hot chocolate dessert, the Three Lions is as close to an English ‘auberge’ as you could find, with Mike and Jayne making a fine chef/patron and wife. Bedrooms in the annexe are spotless and there’s a hot tub in the garden. Nothing trendy here, but how nice a change that makes.
