Often grouped with the Sporades Islands, but not officially a member, Evia is the second largest island in Greece, after Crete, and conveniently located just off the coast of Athens. So why is it so little known outside of Greece? Especially when you consider its green interior of vineyards, pine forests and small farms, dotted with hilltop monasteries and charming villages, it’s perfect for hiking and exploring. And the fact that it’s just across the channel from Halkida.
There’s plenty to choose from when it comes to the best places to stay on Evia. Popular with Greeks, Karystos is the main resort of southern Evia with a neoclassical waterfront, but if you stay here you’re also close to the mountains. If you’re looking for lush views then the best places to stay on Evia are in the island’s north. Pefki is a good choice. If you’re looking for a private villa then you’ll find plenty on the east coast of the island, in one of many tiny towns and hamlets.
