About Kanazawa

A historic city situated in the Ishikawa Prefecture on the Japanese West coast, Kanazawa has been an important cultural and historical centre with many prominent attractions. Particularly noted as being one of the best-preserved major-Edo period cities in Japan - having escaped destruction by air raids in World War II. The city's compact centre makes is an easy place to explore and it is here that many of the best places to stay in Kanazawa are located.

Kanazawa is relatively untouched by foreign tourism, renowned as being somewhat off the beaten track which ensures a quieter tourist experience than some of the city's counterparts. Yet, don't be fooled into thinking that this comes at the expense of an incredible experience - from food to sights, Kanazawa has got you covered. It's garnered a reputation as a top culinary spot in Japan, with the seafood in particular benefitting from lying between the hot south and cold north currents. These wonderfully maintained, city centre gardens feature a total assortment of attractions, from the tranquil pond to quaint woodland walks shrouded by cherry blossoms and are not to be missed!
  • Venturing into the Higashichay old town for a more urban experience is also worthwhile. Strolling through is almost like stepping back in time with historic architecture and charming tea shops set into the buildings.
  • Exploring the Myoryuji, or Ninja Temple, an experience like few others. The structure is filled with secret doors, traps and false corridors, making you thankful that you have a guide to show you the way around.
  • The majestic Kanazawa castle will captivate any visitors with its historic architecture and the informative tour goes into fascinating depth on the techniques used to build it. It's also conveniently located adjacent to the Kenrokuen Garden - making it a great way to easily visit two top sights!
  • For a memorable shopping experience, visit the Omicho Market which contains an abundance of fresh food stalls, including of course the excellent seafood. It's also worth enjoying a meal here with many of the surrounding restaurants enjoying a reputation for great food.
