About Wilmington

The joy of Wilmington, the largest city in Delaware, is that it combines both culture and the countryside in one easy package. Sitting at the confluence of three rivers - the Christina, the Brandywine and the Delaware - visitors can visit the city’s museums and galleries, stroll along the riverfronts and then head up into pretty Brandywine Valley to explore its celebrated gardens. The best places to stay in Wilmington allow you to do all these things with ease.

The city itself houses a clutch of museums from the Delaware Children’s Museum and Museum of Natural History to the Delaware History Museum, in the former Art Deco Woolworth’s building, and Sports Museum and Hall of Fame. Many first-time visitors head to the Delaware Art Museum to see the work of local Brandywine School artists including Edward Hopper and John Sloan.

Stroll the Riverfront, now an attractive collection of redeveloped waterfront shops, restaurants and cafes, and your eyes will be caught by the striking Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, which always offers innovative exhibitions. The Riverfront is the place to find good dining spots and live entertainment plus an IMAX Theatre and, in the winter, an ice-skating rink.

Drive a few miles north from downtown Wilmington and discover the peace and beauty of Brandywine Valley with its string of countryside estates and gardens. Longwood Gardens has more than 1000 acres of gardens, woodlands, meadows and fountain displays while Winterthur Museum & Garden offers a celebrated collection of American decorative arts, 60-acre garden and Enchanted Woods. Nemours, a 300-acre country estate, has a large reflecting pool, long garden walks and an 18th-century, French-style mansion.

Brandywine Valley is also the perfect place to canoe and kayak, particularly for first-timers due to the river’s gentle flow.
