At one end is Cherbourg, close to the D-Day landing beaches, and at the other is the magnificent, fairytale abbey of Mont Saint Michel.   • The Hotel des Isles is a 31 room hotel with New England style decor and beautiful views of the channel. There are family suites as well as rooms, and all benefit from plenty of natural light and access to outside decks. There’s a pool and a hot tub and a lovely restaurant and terrace.

For Peace and Quiet

  • The Manoir de la Fieffe is an elegant, 16th century mansion with four bedrooms, set amid peaceful gardens and countryside 3kms outside Cherbourg. There’s a lovely dining room with fireplace dating back to the 16th century, and a sheltered terrace where you can breakfast in warmer months. Interiors are traditionally elegant but with beautiful contemporary bathrooms.
  • The Château de Pont Rilly is a rather grand and beautifully restored 18th century château, with just four bedrooms and plenty of character. The decor is traditional, think marble fireplaces, antiques and parquet floors, and outside the landscaped garden has small canals.
  • Bruce Castle is a neoclassical mansion turned B&B with three large bedrooms with French windows, chandeliers and antiques. Breakfast is served in a charming dining room and there’s a library and peaceful gardens. You’re 25kms drive from Omaha Beach.

  • The Château de Chantore is a stunning château hidden in pretty countryside just seven miles from Mont Saint Michel Abbey. There are just five rooms, resplendent with beautifully embroidered furniture and antique wall papers.
  • Le Mascaret is a charming, five room hotel, just back from the coast. The decor is a a bit kitsch, but it’s quite understated. There’s a Michelin-starred restaurant, a lovely terrace and a pool in the courtyard.

For Families

  • Château du Rozel is on the ‘manor house-y’ side of the château scale, located just minutes from the coast with beautiful views and lovely grounds. There are four rooms within the château and several cottages in the grounds, which have all their own facilities and views out to sea.
  • The Château de Flottemanville is an elegant château B&B with three rooms and a number of cottages with living areas and kitchens. There’s also a chapel in the grounds. The decor is quite traditional, but less so in the cottages, which are well set up for families.
