Hout Bay, ‘Houtbaai’ or even ‘The Republic of Hout Bay’ to some (after a local prankster went a bit too far and created a passport for the inhabitants of this friendly neighbourhood) lies at the foot of the Table Mountain National Park. With its laidback vibe, this working fishing town is loved by both tourists and locals. There is a good hotel scene here too and it's the perfect place to base yourself if you want to experience the best of both city and beach. Under a 30-minute drive from Cape Town, it is surrounded on all sides by craggy mountains, opening out onto the sparkling blue bay. From here, embark on windy walks along the beach, set out for sea on a fishing trip or pay a visit to Seal Island. Budding surfers might wish to take on one of Hout Bay’s ominous-sounding ‘Dungeons’ – one of the largest waves known to the Western Cape, with swells being recorded up to 14 m high. With its diverse marine life, Hout Bay is home to some of the finest tuna, a huge variety of pelagic sea birds (many of which and more can be spotted at World of Birds), as well as the endangered abalone, and lots and lots of seals! Its lively harbour, strewn with boats and seafood restaurants, gets particularly busy on weekends and in the summer months.
