About Spoleto

Like its Umbrian hilltop neighbours, Spoleto is a medieval maze of elegant palazzo and townhouses, and ornate churches. And accommodation options within Spoleto are limited by space. You won't find any large chain style hotels here! It's all restored heritage properties turned hotel or B&B, as well as charming agriturismos in the surrounding countryside. At the moment our Gurus have just one pick for the best places to stay in Spoleto, a beautifully converted villa.

Spoleto hosts one of Italy’s largest summer festivals, the Festival dei Due Mondi, so come festival-time, finding a bed for the night here is like finding accommodation in Edinburgh during the festival! So if you don’t have any luck, try looking just outside town, at the Borgo della Marmotta, Le Logge di Silvignano, the Castello di Montignano, or the Palazzo Bontadosi possibly. All of these properties offer a great base to explore this magical part of Umbria, with its many hilltop towns, and olive groves and vineyards.

If you’re not visiting during the festival — which happens over two weeks at the end of June, beginning of July — then you’ll have a much more affordable experience, and can bask in the splendours of antiquity and golden age Renaissance Italy in relative peace.

The best places to stay in Spoleto

Within its historic walls

  • Palazzo Leti is an elegant base for exploring this region's many highlights, for beyond Spoleto’s historic walls are a number of other medieval hilltop towns, and you can see some of them from the gardens of the Palazzo. Its 12 traditionally styled rooms are all unique, and decorated to match, but they all have plenty of charm too. We particularly like the original frescoed ceilings in the common areas, and the beautiful terraced gardens, which is where breakfast is served on sunny days.

Travel Information

  • Fly in to Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi International Airport, and from there you can reach Spoleto by train or car in about an hour, and by bus in just over an hour.
  • If you want to rent a car, contact our partner Rentalcars.
  • Summer is Spoleto’s busiest season, because it has a huge summer festival, the Festival dei Due Mondi, a vast cultural event that it’s been hosting for about seventy years now, and totally takes over the town for two weeks in June and July. As far as the weather is concerned, the best time to visit Spoleto is probably between May and June, when temperatures range from minimums of 10° C to maximums of 29° C. It’s hot in the summer, with temperatures in the low 30s, and lots of sunshine. Christmas is beautiful and cheerful, and Easter is a big celebration, and both offer plenty in the way of festivities.
