About Matarraña

A pretty part of eastern Aragón, bordered by Catalonia and Valencia, Matarraña is an idyllic destination for foodies, outdoorsy travellers and keen culture buffs. The verdant Matarraña River Basin is dotted with farms and heritage villages, overlooked by the towering limestone Puertos de Beceite mountains. Intimate and charming, the best places to stay in Matrraña are scattered between its picturesque towns, hills and valleys.

Valderrobres is the region’s commercial hub, perched on the banks of the Matarraña River. The town’s Gothic castle, the Church of Santa Maria and the Renaissance town hall will delight heritage enthusiasts, whilst the weekly market is the perfect chance to fill your bags with delicious local produce. Foodies will be particularly thrilled by Matarraña’s olive oil, cured ham, peaches and lamb. There’s also some fantastic wine produced in the area, and tours and tastings come highly recommended.

Those eager to soak up Matarraña’s natural beauty can follow walking routes between historic towns and villages, or embark upon challenging hikes in the craggy Puertos de Beceite mountains. La Via Verde, A dismantled railway track has been transformed into a fantastic 100km cycling route as part of Spain's network of 'via verde'; this one leads from Alcañiz towards the Mediterranean. Whether you’re dreaming of a bicycling holiday with friends or feasting on top-notch Aragonese produce at family-run restaurants, the best places to stay in Matarraña won’t disappoint!
