About Arundel

A pretty market town set on the River Arun in West Sussex, Arundel is famed for its magnificent Norman castle and cathedral. Popular with weekend visitors from London as well as international travellers, this little town is a wonderful destination for culture enthusiasts looking to admire heritage landmarks and soak up the magic of rural West Sussex, not far from the south coast. Our pick of the best places to stay in Arundel highlights two characterful pubs, each with attractive rooms and cracking cuisine.

Arundel Castle, the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk for over 850 years, is a stunning architectural landmark. Set within 40 acres of landscaped grounds and gardens, it’s an unmissable attraction with a particularly impressive art collection. The gothic Cathedral of Our Lady and St Philip Howard is another must-see, as is lovely St Nicholas Church. Stroll around town to pop into boutiques, galleries and traditional tea rooms, as well as some wonderful pubs. Wanders along the River Arun also come highly recommended.

Many visitors use Arundel as a base for discovering the South Downs National Park. You’ll find easy access to hiking, cycling and rambling trails, as well as some great bird watching. The WWT Wetland Centre, home to myriad ducks, geese and swans, is a real family favourite. A fantastic destination throughout the year, Arundel is at its most lively during the annual Arundel Festival in August. The best places to stay in Arundel fill up fast at this time of year, so book your room well in advance.
