Traditionally the home of Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt, Leros is a wonderful, wild island. One of the more northern of the Dodecanese group, this Greek destination has long been a favourite of tranquil, outdoorsy explorers. The island’s towns are lovely, be we think that the best places to stay in Leros are in more rural spots, surrounded by leafy gardens, undulating hillsides and lush valleys of the interior.

Leros’ capital, Agia Marina is characterised by neoclassical edifices and square white houses, with narrow alleyways leading from the ocean up to the ruins of a hilltop Byzantine castle. The port itself is great for a stroll — as is the perfectly scooped harbour of nearby Lakki, to the south. You’ll find heritage homes in Leros’ smaller villages, too. Alinda and Partheni are two of our favourites, with some excellent tavernas and shops.

Delve into the island’s history with visits to the Virgin of Panteli Castle, the Castle of Panagia and the Leros War Museum, or head into the hills for hiking and cycling aplenty. There’s no shortage of striking beaches for soaking up the sunshine and building sandcastles as a family. Some of the top spots, however, are most accessible by boat, and sailing excursions come highly recommended. • Fly to Athens International Airport, and catch a connecting flight to Leros Airport. You can then hop in a taxi to your hotel, or speak to them in advance about arranging an airport pick up.
