19 Best Hotels in the Portes du Soleil

Mil8 Hotel

The Portes du Soleil is a vast ski region, with 13 resorts, around 200 lifts, and 650kms worth of marked pistes, spreading between the chocolate box perfection of mountain villages scattered around the French/Swiss border. There’s actually a circular route you can ski though the region, which takes you into many of the main resorts, including Chatel, Morgins, Champoussin, Les Crosets, Champery, Morzine and Avoriaz, and we suggested our Gurus start there…Our pick of the best hotels in the Portes du Soleil is wide ranging, from glamping pods, to luxury chalets and party pads that are ideal for apres-ski lovers. This region is spectacular in the summer too, and all of the hotels on our list are open in both seasons.

For the Album

Whitepod Hotel

  • What do you say to glamping in the snow? Because that’s almost what the Whitepod Hotel is offering: the chance to stay in one of 15 stylish, and surprisingly cosy pods, on a fantastically beautiful spot on the side of a mountain. Built on raised wooden platforms, the pods are heated with cosy stoves, and have all the mod cons when it comes to bathroom facilities. Some pods are suitable for families too. The central chalet building houses the spa, restaurant and bar, but each pod has its own terrace.

For a Special Occasion

La Ferme du Lac Vert

  • La Ferme du Lac Vert is a stunning chalet in the charming alpine village of Montriond, just outside Morzine. Its 12 guest rooms are sumptuous and romantic, with sheepskin, hide and faux furs, wood-cladding and velvet, open fireplaces and alpine antiques. La Ferme also have outdoor hot tubs with incredible views, and when you come back from the slopes you’ll be greeted with afternoon tea, drinks and canapés, and four course suppers. They have a chauffeur service to take you to the lifts, and into town if you want an evening out. There’s also a separate chalet that sleeps six.

For Après-ski

Hotel des Dromonts

  • The Hotel des Dromonts in Avoriaz, is a quirky, luxurious choice, that blends traditional alpine style with contemporary taste to great effect. The facade is unique, and inside, the 35 rooms and suites are cosy, but quite futuristic, dating from that period in the 1960s and '70s where Space Age was a style note. The restaurant does traditional Savoyard specialties very well, you can ski right out of the door, and there’s a small spa and a chic après-ski bar.

For Families

Hotel Bellevue

  • Mil8 Hotel is a contemporary, four-star hotel in the centre of Avoriaz, offering a fun atmosphere, cosy après-ski, and incredible mountain views from porthole windows, and from the pool. Mil8 has 42 rooms and suites, with some large enough for families, but some cosy enough for romantics, and all are decorated with contemporary, slightly industrial, flair, and great photos of the Portes du Soleil area. The restaurant has a great kids menu too.
  • The Hotel Bellevue is a smart, family friendly hotel at the foot of the slopes in Les Gets. The decor is bright and contemporary, with a hint of alpine charm. The Bellevue has a pretty comprehensive wellness centre, with hot tubs, saunas and treatment rooms — which is ideal after a day on the slopes, or at the neighbouring ski school. There are some great family rooms (with bunk beds for the kids) too.
  • The Hotel Crychar is a small hotel in the heart of Les Gets. Our Gurus appreciate it for its contemporary chalet decor — think pine-cladding, set against minimal furnishings and brushed concrete bathrooms — its mountain views, and subterranean spa. The Crychar has excellent family rooms, suitable for families of many different shapes, sizes and ages, and there’s a friendly restaurant with a menu that offers something for everyone.

For Groups

Le Petit Dru

  • Le Petit Dru is a traditional, chalet-style hotel overlooking Morzine’s pretty town square, and the spectacular mountain-scape beyond. Its 58 rooms and suites can be configured to suit all sorts of families and groups, and there’s a cosy but cavernous reception area with a lounge, bar and open fire that provides the perfect place for a get together. It also has both indoor and outdoor pools, and a spa, sauna and hammam.
  • Bel'Alpe is the charming chalet hotel neighbour to the main ski lift in Morzine, and its carved wood balconies have the same fantastic mountain views. Inside, the 22 rooms and suites are decorated with plenty more hand-carved wood, and the rooms come in a great variety of shapes and sizes, with plenty of family-friendly configurations. It all feels very cosy, especially the sitting room and games room. Plus there’s a sauna and steam room for easing weary limbs.

For a Mountain Escape

Hotel Plein Ceil

  • The Hotel Plein Ceil is a charming lodge in a fairly secluded spot outside Champery — during the winter season you can only access it via cable car. Our Gurus love it for the views — both summer and winter they’re incredible — for the traditional pine clad rooms, and for the restaurant’s raclette. During winter it’s ski-in ski-out, and during summer you can do the same with mountain bikes. Some of the 34 rooms and suites are suitable for families. There’s also a sauna.

For an Active Break

Chez Jan

  • Chez Jan is a great pick for an adventure, perfectly positioned in Morgins, which is ideal for the slopes in winter — it has three ski schools and access to 650kms of piste — and the trails in summer. Chez Jan looks every bit the traditional chalet from the outside, but inside it’s more contemporary; there’s a wonderful stone fireplace and wood cladding in the bar and restaurant, but its 12 rooms and suites are whitewashed and decorated with contemporary art.
  • Mountain Lodge is a perfectly positioned, family-friendly ski chalet right on the slopes in Les Crosets, ringed with balconies to make the most of the mountain views. There’s a contemporary style spa, and a very warm welcome in the bar, lounge and restaurant. The Lodge also has a cinema, a games room with a billiards table, and ski-hire and storage onsite.
  • The Helvetia Hotel Residence is a charmingly simple chalet style B&B, within a short walk of the ski lift, restaurants and bars of Morgins. Pine clad inside and out, these 28 rooms and suites have really beautiful views — some from private balconies. Plus there's a steam room, sauna and hot tub. A fortifying breakfast is included.

For Alpine Charms

The Farmouse Morzine

  • The Farmhouse Morzine is a surprisingly cosy 18th century farmhouse turned welcoming lodging. It has 11 rooms and suites, seven in the original farmhouse building, the rest in an additional two buildings. They’re able to offer configurations to suit couples, families and larger groups. The decor is traditional and warm, think exposed beams, heavy fabrics, big hearths, and a warm colour scheme. Handy for the ski lifts, but gorgeous in the summer months too.

For Chalet Chic

Hotel Beau Sejour

  • The Hotel Beau-Sejour in Champery is an idyllic choice for anyone who adores traditional alpine charms! It’s a ski chalet through and through, from its wood clad exterior and gabled roof, to its pine-clad interiors, animal hide, spa, sauna, and mountain views. During the summer this is an excellent pick for mountain bikers and hikers, because trails start directly from the door.
  • Hotel L'Etable is only 30 yards from the ski lifts at Les Crosets, so guests at this small chalet can almost ski out of bed in the morning! With an exposed stone facade, topped by a wood peak, balconies and red shutters, it’s hard to find a more traditionally idyllic looking ski chalet. And inside the 17 rooms and suites are cosy and simple, with fantastic views. There’s a great little restaurant onsite too. A mecca for cyclists and hikers come the summer months.

For Couples

Hotel National Resort and Spa

  • The Hotel National Resort & Spa is a cross between a ski chalet and a boutique hotel, located in a fantastic spot in the centre of Champery, with incredible views and easy access to both the slopes and nightlife. Though the resort offers its own nightlife as well, in its chic piano bar and sophisticated lounge. There’s no restaurant, but they do offer breakfast. And they have a spa that’s large enough to include in the name. Accommodation is in 24 rooms and suites, some large enough for families, and all simply and stylishly decorated.
  • Le White lives up to its name, with a white facade, 26 white-on-white rooms, and a primarily white breakfast room too. Hints of grey and silver creep into the contemporary decoration, with faux fur for cosiness. The views are panoramic, you’re 900 metres from Champery's Croix de Culet Cable Car, and with a short stroll of plenty of places to eat and drink.

For Great Value

La Bergerie

  • La Bergerie is a traditional, peaked-roof alpine chalet close to the ski lifts in Morzine, with stunning views, and 27 spacious rooms and suites. You can ski right in and out of the front door in winter, and hike from the doorstep in summer. There’s a pool terrace with a heated pool that’s open all year, set in a little garden, and there’s also a games room. They offer breakfasts, and there’s a cosy bar, but there’s no restaurant.
  • Champery’s Le Chalet de L'Atelier is a charmingly small chalet hotel, with traditional alpine style and a cheerful bar and lounge. The chalet has just four rooms, all cosily designed and featuring plenty of exposed wood, but finished with all the contemporary mod cons. If you ski all day you might want to enjoy the chalet’s hot tub, and the restaurant serves hearty alpine classics.
