About Sidmouth

The stately coastal town of Sidmouth is a wonderful destination for lovers of the great outdoors, with myriad clifftop walks, beautiful beaches and heaps of history to discover. There is plenty of shopping, too, a lively food and drink scene, and all the charm of a classic Regency seaside escape. Hugely popular with families and couples, Sidmouth offers a broad array of accommodation options — from cosy B&Bs to imposing spa hotels. Whether you’re dreaming of spectacular sea views, envisaging a pretty place to unwind with the kids and the dog, or eager to hide away in a fantastic foodie spot, our pick of the best places to stay in Sidmouth promises something for everyone.

Devon’s standout attractions are its natural wonders: the dramatic cliffs and sandy stretches of the 95-mile Jurassic Coast make for brilliant windswept walking throughout most of the year. Setting off from Sidmouth, there are paths criss-crossing the countryside in almost all directions, with lovely pubs in pretty villages for a well-earned pint and a bite to eat. Speak to your hotel for their top recommendations of rambles in the area, whether along the East Devon Way, the Thomas Hardy Trails or the Exe and Axe Estuaries. Head to Bicton Park Botanical Gardens for strolls in verdant surroundings, or take the whole family to the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary to meet hundreds of furry friends before venturing to Wildwood Escot for a fun-filled day of outdoor adventures.

Back in picturesque Sidmouth, amble along the Esplanade to soak up endless sea views and admire white-painted Regency buildings with intricately decorated balconies. Sidmouth Beach is a brilliant place to dip your toes in the sea, whilst the town’s winding streets are lined with independent boutiques, bustling cafés and a burgeoning selection of excellent eateries. Delve into the past at the Sidmouth Museum or gaze up towards the heavens at the Norman Lockyer Observatory. If you’re eager to get out on the water, there’s sailing, paddle boarding and kayaking to try, as well as some good surf in Lyme Bay.

Featuring Devon’s famously striking coastline, a plethora of walks, beaches and activities in the area, Sidmouth is a tremendously appealing base for an elegant seaside holiday. Many of the best places to stay in Sidmouth offer spellbinding sea views, whilst some of our favourite retreats are tucked within expansive gardens or in rural villages, encouraging you to unwind in absolute tranquility.
