About Yarm

Yarm’s pretty spot on the River Tees is the charming backdrop to a no-less charming town, of Georgian buildings and cobbled streets. It’s possibly best known for its spectacular railway viaduct, an impressive 690metre long effort with 43 acres that span the Tees, but visitors are probably more interested in its location - close to the North York Moors National Park; the Yorkshire Dales; the North Pennines; Durham Cathedral; the Darlington Railway Museum, and Barnard Castle. As you may imagine from this list, many of the best places to stay in Yarm are ideal for walkers, but as well as B&Bs and inns, our Gurus’ list of the best places to stay in Yarm has some wonderful country house hotels.

Yarm is a green and leafy place, with 200 year old woods surrounding the river, where, as well as walking trails, there are also bike trails, and a BMX track complete with jumps. Cycling along the river you’ll also come across several impressive churches, and, the railway viaduct.

If you can, it’s worth planning your stay in one of the best places to stay in Yarm to coincide with the regular monthly Farmer’s Market, which is generally held on the second Sunday of the month - make sure you check before you travel, though!

Best Country House Hotels

  • Crathorne Hall Hotel is a 37 room country house hotel just outside of Yarm, and convenient for the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and Durham Cathedral. It looks older and grander, with its pillars, double height ceilings, and huge hearths, but it was built in 1905, and has space for all the mod. cons.. Today that includes a 2 AA Rosette restaurant. The grounds spread for 15acres of rural peace and charm. A popular wedding venue.
  • Judges Country House Hotel is a touch older, a stately, Victorian-built country house, surrounded by 26 acres of its own beautiful gardens and peaceful, secluded woodland. Now that it’s a hotel it has 21 rooms and suites, elegantly decorated in classic period country house style - think antiques including four-poster beds and damask wallpapers. The restate is equally grand, and has earned itself 3 AA Rosettes.
