About Louisiana

Louisiana takes enormous pride in its richly varied heritage, with beautiful architecture, fantastic food, music, nightlife and cultural attractions making it a marvellous holiday destination. The state’s parties are legendary — think Mardi Gras in New Orleans — and its welcome famously friendly. Accommodation options range from intimate B&Bs to expansive plantation-era residences, fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. Many of the best places to stay in Louisiana are in New Orleans, but we have a few favourites in Baton Rouge, pretty Covington and the vast countryside.

Baton Rouge, the state capital, sits right on the Mississippi River. It’s a fascinating hub for history buffs, with the Old Governor’s Mansion, the Louisiana State Capitol, the Old State Capitol and the River Road African American Museum to explore.

Those interested in WWII can visit well-preserved warship the USS Kidd, or head to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. This vibrant city is Louisiana’s best known destination, with elegant buildings to admire in the French Quarter and the Garden District, jazz bars galore and heaps of cultural hotspots.

Formed from centuries of silt washed down the mighty Mississippi River, Louisiana’s coastal areas are characterised by wetlands and swamps, and home to an extraordinary array of flora and fauna. Take boat trips to marvel at rare birdlife, follow the Creole Nature Trail, and visit striking spots including the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge or the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge for fishing, kayaking, hiking and cycling opportunities.

Having belonged to France until 1803, Louisiana boasts a curious blend of influences — including Native American, Spanish, French, African, Creole and Cajun. All can be glimpsed in the state’s distinctive community traditions, and in its mouth-watering cuisine. Expect to eat seriously well at the best places to stay in Louisiana!
