Melbourne may finally have something to rival Sydney’s Darling Harbour: The Docklands. Located in Melbourne’s maritime neighbourhood, the city of Melbourne recently welcomed 1 Hotel Melbourne, a luxury property sitting on the edge of the central business district.
Built from repurposed materials, the hotel is all about sustainable living. Walls are constructed from reclaimed railway sleepers, bluestone and steel trusses are recycled from the former Goods Shed No. 5 which sat on the wharf 80 years ago and there is a zero single-use plastic policy. For guests, this means being surrounded by greenery like biophilic plants and having dining experiences with a strong farm-to-table ethos. The hotel has a trendy restaurant, a cafe for grab-and-go goodies, as well as two bars which turn into social hubs for Melburnians on weekends.
Wellness is in focus here at 1 Hotel Melbourne with a spacious wellness centre featuring a 24-hour gym, steamroom, sauna and multiple treatment rooms. There is also an indoor pool but beware: parents use it as their own children’s waterpark so visit during the “Tranquility Hours” when kids are not allowed for a better experience. Rooms are larger than other city hotels in the area with floor-to-ceiling windows offering great views of the Yarra River, but they are not sound-proof so light sleepers should take note or join the party. Definitely the best luxury lifestyle hotel in the city at the moment and a welcomed addition to Melbourne's hotel boom.
