“A private members club set across a trio of 18th-century townhouses on Portman Square. Lavish rooms and suites are mostly decorated in period style with patterned wallpaper, sleigh beds, and chandeliers. As it's a members club there are several restaurants, bars, and late-night hangouts. Very chic.”

Hotel review

Set on Portman Square, you’d be forgiven for walking straight past Home House unless someone had warned you that the unassuming black door of number twenty was in fact the entrance to the renowned members club, which anyone can book a room in for the night. The building has a fascinating history; it dates back to the 1770s and is seen by many as the finest surviving London townhouse of famous Scottish architect Robert Adam. Luckily for us, many of his stunning interiors have been meticulously restored and can be seen in the property today. Of particular note is the majestic central marble staircase which reaches up to the top of the building and is crowned by a glass dome.

Once inside, you can tell there’s a light, fun side to this place simply by soaking up the cool, exclusive vibe — and by spotting the gold palm tree light fitting which sits beside the check-in desk! There are 23 individually designed rooms and suites, each with a different theme/story to tell. You can expect huge beds and comfortable sofas in the larger rooms, beautiful bathrooms (some with period roll top tubs and his and hers sinks) and lots of quirky objets, furnishings and décor including hand painted silk wallcoverings and sumptuous velvets and silks. Opulent is one descriptive that springs to mind!

The stunning drawing rooms on the first floor have a very period feel with amazing painted detailing on the walls and ceilings, glittering chandeliers, plenty of deep sofas and armchairs, huge windows overlooking the square and a menu that ranges from breakfast to late night cocktails and everything in between! They are a particularly good venue for a very civilised afternoon tea. For those in search of a more formal dining experience, there’s The Restaurant which serves brasserie style dishes, or The Garden — a hidden oasis with plenty of tables and a Raj style tent for protection if the weather turns tricky — where you can dine on seasonal dishes and BBQ delights in the summer months. Head to the Bison Bar for pre-dinner drinks or post-dinner entertainment…there’s always a party to be had here! Kamana in House 21 is the one to book if you'd like to dine on Latin American flavours; it's also where the dancing happens, with resident DJs on the decks till late, from Wednesday to Saturday.

Home House is one of those places that plenty of people have heard of, but not necessarily thought about staying in. We’d urge you to give it a go — membership is certainly not required! You’ll discover a hip pad that’s quirky, lively and offers huge rooms at incredibly reasonable rates.

Why do people love staying in your hotel?
Home House is not simply a place to stay, it is a living piece of London’s history, where Georgian grandeur meets modern indulgence. Our guests often speak of the sense of escapism they feel from the moment they step through the doors. Each visit offers the rare privilege of sleeping within a beautifully preserved eighteenth-century townhouse, with all the luxuries of a private members’ club — elegant drawing rooms, intimate dining spaces, and a warm, personalised service that feels more like a private residence than a hotel.

What is there to do in the area or on site?
Set in the heart of Marylebone, Home House is within easy reach of the boutiques of Marylebone High Street, the Wallace Collection, and the tranquillity of Regent’s Park. Within the club itself, guests need never leave to enjoy a memorable stay: linger over cocktails in one of the beautiful bars, dine in our elegant restaurant or leafy garden, indulge in afternoon tea in the drawing rooms, or experience vibrant social events in House 21.

What kind of breakfast do you offer?
Our breakfast celebrates the best of British and international flavours, with a menu that includes the classic Full English, alongside lighter, seasonal options such as fresh fruit, granola, and pastries, all paired with speciality teas and rich, freshly ground coffee. Each dish is prepared to order, ensuring a refined start to the day in the calm of our dining spaces or garden terrace.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?
Home House offers an exceptional dining experience for every mood and occasion. Guests can enjoy a relaxed lunch or dinner in our main restaurant, al fresco dining in the private garden, indulgent afternoon tea in our Georgian drawing rooms, or the vibrant Latin American-inspired flavours of Kamana in House 21. With such a breadth of choice on-site, there is little need to dine elsewhere, though the eateries of Marylebone Village are just a short stroll away for those wishing to explore.

Which are your most popular room types, and why?
Each of our 23 bedrooms is entirely unique, designed to reflect the Georgian heritage of Home House while offering every modern comfort. Among them, the Lady Islington Suite is especially celebrated, housing an extraordinary marble bathroom designed in 1922, with walls lined in the same deep red marble as St Paul’s Cathedral. The suite’s grand bedroom overlooks the garden and is adorned with a striking mahogany four-poster bed, making it a truly memorable retreat. Guests return time and again for the character, intimacy, and sense of occasion that only a stay in a historic townhouse can offer.

What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms?
Though Home House is a club designed primarily for adults, we welcome families and can provide extra beds in selected rooms for children upon request. Our team is pleased to assist with arrangements to ensure a comfortable and memorable stay for guests of all ages.

What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers?
Home House offers a rare chance to step inside one of London’s most storied townhouses and experience a world of heritage, comfort, and conviviality. Whether joining us for a single night or a longer retreat, guests will find themselves part of a truly private sanctuary in the heart of Marylebone, where history and hospitality are woven seamlessly together.
