“In a prime city-centre spot, this landmark art deco building has been turned into a sleek hotel with monochrome colours, spacious bedrooms, a smart restaurant, private members’ club and vast bar, perfect for people-watching. The bold splashes of red give a clue to the building’s former use.”

Hotel review

Who would have thought a former fire station and police headquarters could be turned into such a sultry and slinky affair? The landmark art deco building, with its massive columns, ranks of deep windows, and on one of Newcastle’s main thoroughfares, is now one of the city’s swishest hotels.

Original features have been retained, including high ceilings and exposed glazed-brick walls, but have been overlaid with a modern interpretation of 1930s glamour. There are inky-black walls and ceilings, art deco patterned carpets, brassy highlights and Matisse-style wallpaper in the dining room while, throughout, punchy shots of fire-engine red remind of the building’s former use. The appropriately named Fire Bar, with its red and black décor, looks out through vast windows (the original glazed garage doors for the fire engines) on to busy Pilgrim Street; a perfect people-watching spot. Do try one of their cocktails – perhaps a Femme Fatale – or a glass of fizz (Taittinger is the house champagne).

Or, as I did, you could order up a Martini to be prepared by the mixologist in your bedroom. All bedrooms share the same art deco design – zig-zag carpets, half-moon bedhead, monochrome colours, classy black-and-chrome bathrooms (shower-only, but a large one) – but vary in size. Top-level rooms also have in-room rolltop baths.

My Martini made the perfect aperitif for dinner where the menu is a throwback to grand British hotel dining, but brought up to date – a Burrata Waldorf salad, Barnsley chop with Reform sauce, local lamb with fermented garlic, and a proper (British) cheese trolley. Then it was back to the bar for a long cocktail, a chat with the bartender and plans for a morning stroll along the Quayside.
