Breakfast on the Riva's waterside terrace, sitting in the shade of palms trees and watching the yachts departing from the quayside, makes a blissful way to start the day. A la carte breakfast delights include poached eggs on avocado toast, followed from midday onwards by Creative Mediterranean fare (plenty of colourful salads) and summery cocktails (try the lavender mule). With just 50 rooms, service is highly personalised and the concierge can arrange all manner of activities, from cycling into Hvar's rural interior to private one-day sailing trips.

Rooms are decorated in dark blue and white, creating a nautical vibe – they're compact and very comfortable, and most have views over the harbour. It's a two-minute walk to the main square with its buzzing open-air cafes and Baroque cathedral, and the entire scene is presided over by a proud hilltop castle. A 10-minute stroll along the coast brings you to the hip Beach Club Hvar, and from the harbour you have regular shuttle-boats to the pine-scented Pakleni islets for back-to-nature bathing. Ideal for a romantic escape.
