Hotel review

The Oetker Collection is renowned for its handful of stunning hotels in prime locations across the globe, and The Lanesborough is its UK outpost. In an unbeatable Hyde Park Corner location, overlooking the park itself, The Lanesborough embodies discreet, sophisticated luxury yet without any of the stuffiness that can come with a high-end five star hotel. Here the staff are as friendly as they come, eager to please (whatever the request), and full of local knowledge should you need it.

Walk in to the lobby here and you feel like you’ve entered a bygone era, exactly as Viscount Lanesborough might have imagined back in 1719 when it was built as his country mansion overlooking Hyde Park, with its opulent interiors featuring plenty of gilding, antique furniture and a fabulous collection of 18th century artworks. The classic elegance continues in the individually designed rooms and suites with their sumptuous fabrics, period furnishings, chandeliers and marble bathrooms — the best offer large windows and expansive views over Hyde Park or Wellington Arch. High ceilings provide grandeur, and attention to detail can be seen everywhere from the beautifully arranged flowers, Dyson hair dryers and hidden TVs (discreetly secreted away behind paintings) to the personal butler service.

Head downstairs to the Withdrawing Room for a relaxing read, or pop in to the atmospheric panelled Library Bar for a cosy drink or two. For dinner (and breakfast), The Lanesborough Grill is a revelation. Its modern British cuisine is overseen by Shay Cooper (who has earned Michelin stars in previous establishments), and is superb; classic dishes executed to perfection with a twenty first century twist.  It certainly lives up to the grandeur of the stunning room, with its glass ceiling and a fantastic collection of modern artworks that complement the rich Regency-style décor.

The final feather in The Lanesborough’s cap has to be its spa. This vast subterranean area has been lauded by critics and offers some of the most comprehensive spa facilities you’ll find anywhere. There’s a hydrotherapy pool (splash hours are available if you want to take the kids!), saunas, steam rooms, treatment rooms and gym (fitness classes are complimentary for all guests). It’s the prefect spot for some post retail therapy or sightseeing relaxation.

In a crowded market, such as London’s five star hotel scene, you have to do something to stand out from the rest, and The Lanesborough does it quietly but very successfully with its glorious interiors, top-notch service and excellent facilities. Quite simply it is a fabulous property that I would be happy to return to again and again and again!
