Hotel Review

The Station Hotel is situated in a lovely, yet unassuming, sandstone building in Rothes High Street. It started life at the turn of the century and at the height of its glory days was seen as the place to stay for wealthy visiting fishermen and women. The property reopened its doors in 2016, following an extensive renovation by local entrepreneurs Richard and Heather Forsyth. No expense has been spared and with the excellent attention to detail, they have succeeded in creating a contemporary luxury hotel just an hour's drive from Inverness or Aberdeen. There are six suites and nine bedrooms, all individually designed in a modern Scottish style (think tartan throws and a palette echoing the scenery), and all featuring wonderfully comfy Hypnos beds, and smart contemporary bathrooms with complimentary Arran Aromatics toiletries. For something really special book the Caperdonich Suite (all the suites are named after a local distillery). With views over to Ben Aigan it’s a lovely dual aspect room, with the added bonus of a bath for two situated upstairs in a cool mezzanine area. It really would not look out of place in a leading five star hotel in London. Other notable little features include a coffee machine and a complimentary dram of the local Grant single malt whisky - perfect to enjoy sitting by the fire deciding which of the 50 local distilleries to visit. Downstairs you'll find a cosy bar with a wonderful local ale and, of course, a vast selection of whiskies (over 500) in the Spirit Safe bar. The restaurant is elegantly decorated and the food is excellent. A novel touch is the ‘Mix and Match’ option on the menu that allows guests to try up to six local dishes. The team here are exceptional - offering a warm welcome, great service and a vast pool of local knowledge. The Station Hotel is certainly one of the best hotels in the Highlands - food lovers, whisky lovers or golfers looking for traditional opulence will not be disappointed.
